I want to operate the Sierra Chart on the MacBook Pro.
I find it interesting to know whether there is a positive feedback when working the mukbuk along with Sierra Chart?
Whether the programm Wine is suitable for installation at Sierre chart on MacBook Pro?
If there is a good experience, I want to ask it.
Thank you for your answers.
I run my development environment of SC within a Windows 10 VM running on VirtualBox (on a late 2012 Mac Mini) and it works well. I trade live from a remote Windows server using Microsoft RDP for Mac.
I tried using Wine but it was too much trouble to install.
I was never able to install the Wine and Sierra Chart connect through it. I had to use a paid resource CrossOver.
To my regret the Wine too problematic connected to the MacBook Pro. I tried to use the Terminal on Mac to download the Wine and use step by step instructions.
Sorry until the products of the two companies (Apple and Microsoft) can not properly be combined.
Bootcamp is the way to go IMO. Then you have dual-boot ability and can run Windows natively.
Only problem is you loose some hardware related features which make the Mac's excel over PC's in my opinion, like more interface options and the such. And, in the end, it doesn't make much sense to buy a Mac to be running Windows on it most of the time.
With all that in mind, I got a second notebook, PC-based, which I use exclusively for trading, and kept the MacBook for all other tasks.
I just went through similar situation. I tried everything!
It turns out that Mac has Bootcamp already installed on it. Go to Finder and in search, type in "bootcamp". It will ask you for a Windows ISO file to install windows. You can get it for free from windows you just won't be able to activate it. Which if your only using it for trading then it won't affect anything. If not just download it and pay windows the $120 they ask for.
BootCamp will ask you to assign a certain amount of memory to windows, i guess that is your preference. I assigned 100GB just incase. Thats really it. Very simple. Wish i knew this before I went through all the headaches of wine and virtual box and everything else. Hope this helps someone in the future.
"It's not about being right or wrong, it's about how much money you make when you're right, and how much you don't lose when you're wrong"
You can run it without activating for some period of time, I think it is 90 days. After that you will have issues, and you don't want your trading platform to go belly up by surprise one day. If you can afford a MacBook, you can afford to pay the activation fee.
I just set up SC on my early 2011 MacBook Pro (OS X) using bootcamp as a back up system/travel. I set up Windows 8.1 since I had a spare license. So far, the SC works with the IB TWS. I have my fingers crossed since Windows 8.1 doesn't function completely (for example: updating doesn't work).
I tried to use some software to run on the Mac the Sierre.
I stopped at the Crossover program. It's not a bad app. Sierra works with the Crossover is very good. But it works well only when you do not need to do the research.
The problem arose when I wanted to use the compiler dll for setting indicators. This problem has not given work Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0. I contacted support and received a reply: «After combing through our tickets a few more times I noticed that this seems to be more of an issue of getting Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0 working. While Sierra Chart should run from your testing, regrettably no version of Visual Studio run functionally in Crossover as of now. A programming environment such as the one you are attempting to set up for Windows really needs the full Windows OS. If you need to compile indicators you should run your program in a full emulator like Parallels, Bootcamp or Virtualbox. That way you will have all the components of the Windows Operating system on your computer and all of the programs will run as intended» ... to continue
«At this point I'd encourage you to research the Windows Emulators: Bootcamp, Parallels and Virtualbox to find out more about windows Emulators and how they work. They should be able to run your program flawlessly.
Unfortunately as far as Crossover goes, it will most likely never be able to run Visual Studio correctly due to the nature of how VS is programmed. I am truly sorry there is not anything more I can do for you on this issue».
I continue to explore the Mac to work with Sierra
