no need to do it

using ubuntu-desktop 12.04.3 just do

sudo apt-get install openbox obconf obmenu tint2

Just thought I would make my 1st post in futures.io (formerly BMT).

I know Big Mike had been looking for solution 2/3 years ago about setting up multiple mornitors (>2 mornitors) in Linux. I have been an Ubuntu users for 2+ years, but only on my non-trading station. Just wondering, anybody has any luck with setting up 3 or more monitors on Linux platform?

Hi,

Multi-screens is doable with Ubuntu 12.04 or >

You can manage up to 12 screens (for example two Graphic Card with 6 display ports on each card).

You need to use at least one ATI/AMD Eyefinity Graphic Card ... don't forget to use active displayport converters if your screens have only DVI, VGA or HDMI connections ...

You need to configure xrandr via arandr'package that you need to install first.

You also need to install ATI/AMD drivers -> reboot -> start arandr -> save your screens configuration (to automatically launch the xrandr config at each start -> copy your screens configuration into /etc/X11/Xsession.d/45x11-xrandr).

This should do the trick ...

Note : best web source for Ubuntu multi-screens is a French one : multi-ecran - Documentation Ubuntu Francophone ...

@slickiam - Wanted to have sierra / some flavor of unix and wondering if the instructions provided in this thread - are they latest or do you happen to have any updated /recommended combination of components that you use?

Also - Any specific RDP tool that you can recommend for whatever this linux flavor you recommend.

thanks in advance.

Hi ejtrader,

Sierrachart FAQ ( Help topic 56: Run [AUTOLINK]Sierra Chart[/AUTOLINK] on GNU/Linux, BSD, Solaris and Mac OS X - Sierra Chart) only need to download vcrun2010, dotnet40 and corefonts using winetricks. The setup he has provided above gives a minimal window manager so it is Very resource-light. Or you can have the whole package setup similarly using the ArchBang distro. However, the learning curve could be quite steep although documentation is plentiful on ArchWiki.

Could you explain what you would like to use the RDP tool for? If you would like to set it up on a virtual environment so as to try it out, I recommend VirtualBox.

Hi Mike,

Yes, but forwarded the X to another box with monitor. Wine needs X to run, AFAIK.

Clarification :

NOT for trading, just to have the charts on a corner of the monitor, but rendered from different box.

@tryingHard365 - thank you very much for your reply. Appreciate it.

Would certainly review about the first part.

On second part about RDP - I am planning to use it on a VPS - unix/wine/sc rather than windows/sc - and is the reason to check about potential solutions to access this serer using remote desktop tools. if the target was windows - it would have been "mstsc". On ubuntu 14.0x - I tried xrdp/xcfe combination and the experience was not that "snappy".

Thanks

Hi ejtrader,

Seriously trading over internet connection is probably a bad idea. However, here are some links to info for you about forwarding X ( X11 Forwarding using SSH, xorg - How to forward X over SSH from Ubuntu machine? - Unix & Linux Stack Exchange) .

Another way is via VNC protocol and client. I have heard of people using remmina but those are mostly system administrators ( Remmina - The GTK+ Remote Desktop Client | SourceForge.net) but there may be other VNC clients you might try and like more. Also I am not sure about the 'snappiness' of this as it was ok for sysadmins but might be super frustrating for you.

I am going to go out on a limb here and guess that you have a somewhat automated trading program setup on SierraChart which you are trying to set up on a VPS? Personally would suggest that you write your trading program to run using your broker's API (e.g. IB API) and creating a real program to run it instead of running it through SC on a VPS. If you can program ACSIL, pretty sure you would be able to pick up other programming languages.
