Windows 8 RTM is out in the wild.

Anyone running Sierra Chart on it yet and can report back?

Any issues? Any adjustments needed?

In particular, I'd like to hear from users running multiple monitors. Can the metro interface be disabled entirely and give us a traditional desktop and start menu?

Mike

Hi all,

SC Support's latest stance on Windows 8: Notice: Windows 8 - Sierra Chart

They seem very displeased with it.. Some snippets of their views from the thread above..

"... ...Unless Microsoft and all driver developers have specifically engineered Windows 8 and the drivers to be 100% compatible with existing software, they are going to create tremendous problems for people throughout the world for the next 10 to 15 years. Therefore, for most people who are on Windows 7 and depend upon a stable operating system, Windows 8 is simply not a usable product. However, what we believe is the real core problem is that Windows 8 and/or the driver's have bugs in them.

One of our users had reported blue screen errors on Windows 8 on one of their systems. Unbelievable at this point in time. And until these kinds of issues are worked out over the next couple of years, and it will take years , Windows 8 operating system is not deemed as stable and no computer manufacturer should be promoting it.

When Windows Vista came out, it was beyond comprehension the level of bugs that it had. It could not even render dialog windows properly and the introduction of the User Access Control, was a tremendous detrimental impact upon existing applications. Programs may have had trouble writing into their own folder if they were installed into the Program Files folder. This is why to this very day we do not use the Program Files folder. We believe an application should be self-contained all of the files associated with it should be easily found and not scattered about your system. We believe in quality engineering."

"... ...We do not want to take sides and try to keep independent, but ask yourself what is the purpose of using Windows 8. Unless you have the need and compatible programs for the new type of user interface it uses, it serves no purpose to update.

Most of our customers are focused on generating income from trading and investments and you should have stable reliable tools to do that and not chasing the latest thing.

You have to ask yourself, who are you benefiting. Microsoft or yourself? Clearly Microsoft is acting within their own interest in order to dominate the market because they think the small computing devices and the type of user interfaces they have is the new thing and they want to be part of that as much as possible."

"... ...We certainly don't want to be spending the next several months and years dealing with Windows 8 support requests.

We have made the decision to move Sierra Chart onto a platform independent foundation which will allow it to be used on the Mac OS X and GNU/Linux. While at the same time we will continue to support the core Windows operating system of Windows 7 and XP.

We would also like to add, never with any new operating system that Microsoft came out with, with the exception of Windows 8, was there ever any stability issues reported with Sierra Chart. There was at best only some minor changes required in order to make Sierra Chart work optimally with changes in the new OSs. And you may not have any problems with Windows 8. Some users have reported a problem and others are not reporting a problem at all. "

I think their reaction is a bit strong. I've installed Windows 8 on my non-trading machine and it is fine. Seems just as fast as Windows 7. I've had no problems with any programs except for a few graphic glitches which I expect Nvidia to work out in future driver updates.

I think there are some nice features with Windows 8 but not necessarily a reason to upgrade. The new start menu is actually kind of nice when you get used to it. It's basically like the old one if you have all your important programs pinned and all programs removed. I just use Alt+q and search for whatever I need to open. Took me about 2 days to get used to it.

Edit: Google 'Classic Start' if you don't like the Metro start menu.

Have you run SC on this non-trading machine with Win8?

I'm going to put this in big letters because I think it's important, because I had to wipe win8 and reinstall win7 from scratch:

Sierra Chart and Windows 8 do not work together right now!

SC blames Win8, as well they likely should. Please do not install Win8 if you are running SC. Many users have problems, but specifically I was running an ATI Radeon 57xx card which may have something to do with it. Sierra runs flawlessly on Win7, so please, please keep it and do not try to upgrade like I did.

Here's another negative report about Windows 8:

Quoting
[Removed name] I am using sierra charts the trial version, so far I liked, but I having a lots a shutting down from the system, I have a windows 8, I tried already to reinstall, I open the firewall, please let me know what I can do to fix the problem

What are we to tell them? We do not see how we can resolve this if the bug is in Windows 8 or the one of the drivers like the video driver. Most likely as we said the issue is at the driver level.

Our comments are intended to steer people away from Windows 8 because clearly some users are going to have trouble and the experience will unnecessarily take their time. Why should you be giving Microsoft your money even though it may not be very much, only to empower them further and cause trouble for yourself. You may not have a negative experience, but you might.

As we previously indicated, we are going to be working on support for Mac OS X and GNU/Linux. This is going to take a considerable amount of time, 1-2 years, however we will do it.
