Problem with the mask is that it may protect you from direct air droplets, but it will increase risk of you touching your face to adjust the mask much more. I've wore N-95 mask for last whole year as I live in very polluted/crowded city and travel can be bit of pain, so I can speak from experience here that you do end up touching your face much more than otherwise.That leaves you exposed to more possibility of your contaminated hand touching your face. Please remember that corona virus is not just looking for opening of nose and mouth, its perfectly fine with eyes too.
Also, mask tends to get wet from your own droplets, which also attracts foreign particles to stick on them. So there is good chance that you touching the mask would be act of you touching some contaminated part on the mask from outside.
This is not to say its not safe to wear a mask or you shouldn't, its to say its much better for patient to wear one rather than millions of others, which wont do much in all honestly unless its something which covers everything and you disinfect/clean it regularly.
Also, these aren't really my arguments, these were mentioned in videos made by doctors here, I assume one of the reasons is to avoid creating situation of panic as there are are much more people here than the possible mask supply.
Doctors opinion: just in case you don't have immediate access to doctor, what to avoid and what to take from conventional drugs to make sure bodies response to invasion is good.

The best thing that can be done presently is to take yourself out of circulation as much as possible, and to use the social distancing and the handwashing protocols that are being put out to the public.
Yes, my country has implemented mandatory close downs on everything, shops, gyms and all. At least in larger cities everything is halted. My entire family is going to stay at home for at least 2 weeks starting today.

I work as an expat in China and have been here since the start. In reality it was not only Wuhan that were closed even if that area was mandatory from central goverment all Cities have their own Goverment and they more or less used the same teqnuiqe and closed of the Cities. All 1.4 billion people have been in quaranteen i would say and it sure helped alot. Even if this area i am in have not had a case for 28 days evryone still uses masks indoors at work and outdoors and it is still mandatory to evryday disinfect the public areas in our plant and wear masks until otherwise informed by the local authorities and they send inspectors so if you do not follow they will close you down immediately.
I also read that some do not beleive this and that. China has the bigggest social media network on the planet if something happens in spread like wild fire and cant be stopped evryone knows evrything even the street sweeper a nice girl by the way showed me pitcures and texts that had to do with this issue wile i was waiting for a read light to turn green this morning on my bike.
It seems this "not living " RNA molecule ( COVID -19) spreads very easy so use masks and wash your hands and do not touch your face. They mixed chilly water here with handsanatiser then you only touch your face once . he he

Now it shows what "Just In Time Delivery" means when the economy is struggling. Especially when parts today are coming from over the world. Not just produced in the neighborhood. But risking to halt all productions within days just because some parts are not in the warehouse.
