Most of you probably saw this in the news, I thought I'd just post it here in case anybody wanted to discuss. Personally, I don't think this is as controversial as some deemed it to be. Most of the news coverage about it cut out a lot of the clarifying explanation, which I thought was important and more complimentary to women than covered.

Fact: Best trader I have ever met is a woman and I am a man.

Opinion: Trading success is largely due to one's ability to be aware of one's emotions and their impact on one's decisions and the ability to be self aware of those emotions so they have only positive impact on one's trading.

Opinion: Women in general are more able to be self aware of their emotions and more likely to get outside assistance (i.e. therapy or counseling) on how to channel their emotions towards a cause.

I really wish more women would choose to trade... I have learned more from one woman than from all of the men I have discussed trading with combined.

Oh.. and thanks to all of the guys who have given me advice and help.. I am not trying to take anything away from any of you. ..I really do appreciate it.

Neither.

I initially almost answered male-male, but quickly asked myself why that was my answer, and my initial thought was because the only successful traders I know are male.

I remembered something from thinking fast and slow, which I think was called "substitution" where you are asked one question, but answer an more simplified question.

So while all the successful traders I know are male, all of the failed traders I know are also male. So with the same reasoning I could answer answer Male - female, because all the failed traders I know are male.

The lack of female traders in general seems to be a environmental bias, rather than a predisposition. Like a positive feedback loops from men who think that men make better traders.

Or maybe not, and the penis is, in-fact, a divining rod.

Honestly, i was looking for the everyone is equal vote. But then chose men are better being a man. the whole woman traders are rare thing is definitely something that may make it seem like all the successful traders are men. Just because more men try it there are bound to be more failures as well as successes. I don't think the percentage of success based on sex would be disproportionately large for 1 group or the other. It may but there is no concrete evidence i can think of. I think a great microcosm is the futures.io (formerly BMT) webinars, look at how many men present over women. I would say Linda bradford Raschke of futures.io (formerly BMT) presenters is probably the best and longest careered trader there. But there are but a very small handful of women of webinar presenters to the large majority of men. But gotta say the best one in the bunch is a woman.

I think Hungarians make the best traders, i.e. Soros, Birinyi, Peterffy, Teller. OK, Teller wasn't a trader but he invented the hydrogen bomb, for-gods-sake.

Well done for giving it some thought. People need to be careful with their answer because I would guess most will just answer based on the gender who contains the most traders. Obviously men. That has nothing to do with which gender has a better predisposition to trading. It merely points to likely environmental factors that over time have made this a mans game.

I am a man and think woman have a better predisposition to trading. Two main reasons:
  • Woman will more readily admit when they're wrong. Men can often be stubborn in trying to prove they're right. In trading, the only 'person' who is right is the market
  • Woman are more willing to analyze their emotions. As most will admit, psychology is huge in trading. For men in general, analyzing emotions is something we need to learn, with woman it is natural.

Obviously these are generalizations.

Diversification is the only free lunch
