Mike, is there any way you can change the reply function so that the quoted text shows 2 or 3 lines and hides the rest? Place a function where the user can click to expand and see the entire quoted text if they wish. It happens a lot where someone will quote an entire essay with a one liner saying 'I agree' or something similar thats vague and irritating.

I have a slight issue with this. I totally agree about the people who do a full quote of an enormous post -- and they always get in the charts and images too -- and then write a short little sentence -- or even a long one -- at the end. The huge quote takes up space and does no good.

But, how about those who, like me, don't do this? I will usually quote a short excerpt from a post that contains the thought I want to reply to, and then I respond to it. (Also, as everyone knows, I will never just type a one-liner either. ) I've generally selected what I want to talk about in the quoted text, and wouldn't want it to get truncated arbitrarily.

Also +1.

Maybe it needs to be dynamic and be dependent upon how long the post is. Anything under X words is posted in entirety anything over X and it only shows the first Y lines?

Maybe it needs to be dynamic and be dependent upon how long the post is. Anything under X words is posted in entirety anything over X and it only shows the first Y lines?

If we do it this way, then we should apply the sizing criteria when the new post containing the quote is saved, so a long post that is quoted but then edited before the new post is submitted may not have to be cut down.

Example: original post is X plus 2,000 -- would need to be cut if quoted in full. But if the original is edited down in the new quote to less than X lines (or words or whatever is used) -- no cutting.

This seems to accommodate the different concerns very nicely: big posts are not quoted in full (although are expandable by the reader), and posts that are edited for length are not cut back if they stay within the limit. Make the limit large enough for a moderate post or a reasonably edited post, and smaller than a big post, and it solves the problem. At least it seems to.

Maybe I am saying something stupid but why not place all quotes in a scrollbox with fixed size.

I would not always have the same size, for example if the size of the quote is smaller than the line limit (as in the image above), I would make the scroll box only large enough to contain the quoted lines, to avoid a lot of blank lines.

But if the size of the quoted lines is greater than the limit, then a scroll box of size equal to the limit, and then the scroll bar to let you see more, is a good solution.

Should be way less coding and easy for the users too.

Low priority but is it possible to have a single email for those that asked for weekly updates instead of one email per thread?

For example, right now, I have my notifications set to weekly but a new email is trigger per thread at the end of the trading week and it is overkill:

That would require major underlying changes, sorry.

The system is setup on a per thread basis.

I will consider what can be done whenever I start to work on the follow user feature, but I'm not sure there is much likely on this one.

@Big Mike

Hi Mike,

There is some interesting behavior on Safari via the iPad. The User names are not showing up correctly in the post window. It started happening yesterday.

I believe @bobwest fixed it already by removing the emoji from the thread title
