If that makes any difference, I've just tried via the Quick Links menu (Quick Links --> Mark Forums Read), but it still does not show 0 as posts.

You are referring to the navbar "New Posts (xxx)" number not being zero, right?

But does the actual display show posts, or not?

I think I understand the issue now, it's not about caching the write query resetting to zero --- its about caching the new posts query, which has performance implications to disable. Let me think on it and circle back.

this time it seemed to work - I'll keep an eye on it as new posts are made

This is still occurring, albeit the frequency seems to have gone down. Rate seems to be about 50% now.
