Meaning I still need margin to hold the position, even though it is not trading, until it officially settles. Usually 2-3 days.

For cash settled, most brokers let if go through...

For cash settled, most brokers let if go through expiration. Then when the contract is officially settled, you are closed out of position.

I've had that happen, and I remember it tied up margin...

I have been trading physically delivered commodities for 30 years, and this worst case scenario has never happened to me. And more than once I have forgotten or neglected to roll over positions.
