Amen about sandboxie. I don't use portable apps, but from the testing I've done with Sandboxie it's amazing.
If your email clients, and browsers are sandboxed, you can click to your hearts...

Unfortunately, even that way it isn't 100% secure. To achieve that you have to unplug the 'puter after disconnecting from the internet.

If you only wanted to scan you can use the free version. The site doesn't say, about time limited, but it's $24.95 which is very reasonable.
