Just FYI: 9.2 beta version - TS has started supporting "second" based charts as well.

I also agree loading the TS data in MC is tedious, but I use 5-sec volume exhaustion as [one] of my confirmations. Minimum resolution on TS is one-minute, where MC will process TS data to the second... for my intraday trading that is a benefit.

TS workspaces

From what I have read, the occasional freezing likely occurred during backtesting for you? The new TS does supports multicore functionality but not in the backtesting environment, which is limited to using 1 core (from what I have read, which is why I too have ruled out TS as a platform).

I do not backtest with TS, Primarily used for long term Analysis and organization of instruments. Issues I experienced happen during normal usage, and again... It is convenient and for my purposes it is a good platform/product... I just have my Caveat's about reliability and TS as a brokerage... But for Charting, I like it...

My next question is about Tradestation's data. As it does display a mammoth amount. You mentioned it's organized and friendly, but does it come with tick volume data??? That is my main concern. I will forego huge amounts of historic data for the chance to use minimum 1 month of aggregated tick volume data (eSignal provides - trying to verify another provider).

Contacted TS to confirm: They say they do provide aggregated tick volume data [6-months] but I suggest you contact them directly, to make sure we are talking apples to apples...

This is really important to me. I was 90% sure I finally selected MC/IB/anon feed as my setup, but this lack of T&S issue in MC is disturbing. How big an issue is using IB's T&S? Is it a nuisance?

It isn't really an issue, just amazing that they still don't provide it. You will be running IB anyway, it is simple to minimize TWS and *pin a T&S somewhere on your screen. Same with TS's T&S, *IF* you are feeding MC with TS anyway... I surely wouldn't load TS just for the T&S...

***

Attached is a sample of TS Workspace's and Quotemgr organization.
[My workstation consists of 4 ea. 30" monitors] smaller screens, these workspace's are to cramped

Quotemgr is tabbed [each tab has its own set of sections] and you can create label rows to "organize" instruments within each tab. {showing the misc tab for reference.}In MC it is not nearly as convenient.

Each symbol in the quote manager is linked to the research workspace [Monthly/Weekly/Daily/240/60 charts]. Annotations are saved, and as you go through symbols, previous analysis and notes are available for modification, reference.

Scanner is also linked to these work spaces, so if during your scans, a current or previous instrument of interest appears, you have your research available

Very convenient to conduct the research on thousands of instruments, once identified, create a tabbed quote mgr page and set alarms.

The Majority of trading is conducted in preparation and trade management, actual execution only takes seconds...

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” – Seneca

Trade well...

Thank you for that update, that is good news actually... I don't run the Beta's, may load it on an old system to test..

Appreciate the info...

Awesome info NoBias, I appreciate you looking into the tick vol question for me!

Now, 1 final flurry of questions RE: Tradestation Pricing:

1) Are you a brokerage client? (I assume your caveat is the same as mine - not a true ECN, hence why they don't charge commissions).

I ask this because the platform and radar (for forex users only) are free for brokerage clients. Min. initial deposit equals $2,000 to qualify, never place a trade. True, 2k is locked up but definitely better than spending 250/month, no?

2) If you aren't a brokerage client, are you spending $250/month for TS (if you don't mind sharing)?

I actually think I would get TS data over eSignal just by holding a min acct balance of 2k rather than spending monthly fees.. For eSignal this becomes beneficial after 15 months, and TS itself beneficial after just 8 months-ish. 6 months vol data for me is plenty, as the strats I want to test should theoretically work in any market condition.

Yes, I am a brokerage client. I deposited sufficient funds to qualify. If you inquire on available deals you can get a very good rate for Futures and Equity Data, Forex is free.

Correct, they are not an ECN. TS obtains their "fees" for Forex via spread. I prefer to Pay IB the straight commission and not have to *fight the spread.

I currently pay $99/month for platform and $41 for Data. Total $140/month
This covers US Equities, Futures[ ES, NQ, GC, CL, etc], and Forex
{attached SS of data subscriptions}

I could easily do the minimum transactions to eliminate the Platform fee in a futures or equity trade, but I refuse to trade with them. So I just pay the monthly service fee for brokerage clients. Slippage and bad fills far outweigh the $99 fee.
{ButtonTraders efficiency, pays for itself and Data/Platform fees many times over}

For DAX and FESX I use IB/MC, as you need to subscribe for Eurex in IB to trade, delayed TS for Daily/Weekly/Monthly is sufficient for Swings. Due to the extended closed session of Eurex, I do not feel comfortable with overnight risk in DAX or FESX, just too Gappy.

One of the benefits of Futures and Forex is the 24 hr nature of the markets. With Button trader, simulated stops can be created, even if stop market orders are not native at the exchange.

FYI: Forex Trades do not qualify towards reducing the equity/futures platform

The "free" platform and radar for forex only loads forex, isn't worth the trouble.

Well it looks like I've got quite the decision to make. I am putting this under heavy consideration.

I'm going to demo and make my decision based on quality and feel.. not based on price, as its true that a $99/month fee is less than my acceptable loss on any given trade. Basically, If I'm up 1 trade on the month with my system it'll cover my data fee so price will not be a factor.

Happy trading!

- IB is free but I read that they don't support historic data. Don't turn off your PC

IB is cheap but not free (at least on european markets). It has historical data, and how much you can go back in time depends on how much commissions you generate.

IB Market Data

I believe you are mistaken, Commission generation does not determine "how much historic you may receive per instrument" but the number of instruments you may view simultaneously is increased upon certain criteria, acct bal or commission generation [volume].

The Data available per instrument remains consistent.

IB: Second, minute or daily bars 1 year back
To determine monthly/weekly one must load the symbol to determine, it isn't published on IB's website

That hint was given informally by IB in a reply to something else, but I don't remember where (maybe in an elitetrader thread?).
I wouldn't swear on it though; I surely haven't seen it on their site. I can say that I could go back further than one year, but I haven't tested if how much I could go back were related to commissions.

Due to time constraints, please do not PM me if your question can be resolved or answered on the forum.

Need help?
1) Stop changing things. No new indicators, charts, or methods. Be consistent with what is in front of you first.
2) Start a journal and post to it daily with the trades you made to show your strengths and weaknesses.
3) Set goals for yourself to reach daily. Make them about how you trade, not how much money you make.
4) Accept responsibility for your actions. Stop looking elsewhere to explain away poor performance.
5) Where to start as a trader? Watch this webinar and read this thread for hundreds of questions and answers.
