TDA allows futures in IRAs, SEP IRAs, Solo 401Ks. Employer sponsored 401Ks are plans setup by the employers. I believe they set the rules on what investment products are eligible to be traded in those accounts - mostly mutual funds, stocks and ETFs.

Let me know when you get a solo k set up and trading. I tried and didn't succeed. You will find a lot of brokers restrict what you can invest in a 401k retirement account. A Solo K is still considered an employer account. I spent 3 hours in their local office trying to do It. I went to them because I probably read the same info you are. I was also suprised that once you get past the sales person Interactive Brokers restrict what you can invest in. Those were the first 2 I contacted. As I said their marketing material and reality isn't the same.

You are correct. I just checked with my rep at TDA. No Futures in Solo Ks. SEP IRAs are allowed.

I don't know for certain, but I suspect that they don't want the risk of a possible negative account and then have a liability.

There may still be an option to contibute to a Solo K and roll the funds into a SEP IRA to trade futures.

That is true but you lose the tax advantages of the 401k. You can pump 10 times as much money into a 401k over a basic IRA or Roth. SEP I believe is more but after I learned the benefits of the 401k I stopped considering IRA's.

@john5 OP,

Have you found the solution?
I'm coming back after 6 years absence and I'm the similar boat except for TOS part.

I have the lifetime license with Ninjatrader and trying to find a good brokerage to trade without much lag/slippage at the same time a good data provider.

Best scenario is keeping everything with NT but if I remember it right and also just started reading through this forum that NT still has some slippage issues when placing order?

Im considering IB for both futures and stock trades and wonder if it's good idea??

I have been with TOS for over 10 years, so I am keeping it for now, or at least I am up to speed with NT. I have opened a brokerage account with NT, which comes with a data feed, but for now, the plan is to place the trades via TOS.

If you don't mind how did you like the kinetic feed so far compared to TOS?
I'm sure you are satisfied with TOS and very familiar with their speed and reliability.

I just got everything set up with NT last week, so it is a little early to say. Seems good so far, but would need to spend at least several months with it under different market conditions to see how it does.

I am not sure what you are referring to but NinjaTrader does not have slippage issues with placing orders. Orders are transmitted through CQG servers with direct access to the various exchanges. I can tell you that Interactive Brokers latency for order submission is higher on average than CQG/Continuum which is what the overwhelming majority of NinjaTrader customers use.
