I have been a trader for a number of years but I tend to have basic needs that do not require programming knowledge. Can someone please explain to me 'in simple terms' what API and FIX are in regards to platforms, data and clearing? Does this refer more to home built platforms connecting to data or connecting your choice of data and platform to fcm's? Any insight would be appreciated.

API means an application programming interface, in other words an API is a "hook" provided to programmers to access someones product or services directly.
FIX is the Financial Information eXchange, and provides a framework to exchange information such as messaging orders, quotes, etc etc. More info here: The FIX Protocol Organization > What is FIX?
