This is a very easy call IB answers all of your requirements and its one of the most popular brokers in this forum. TWS runs on MAC and it's written in Java. As a beginner you should stick with a popular provider that you can use with various trading platforms, IB probably has the most platforms connecting to it because of their open API.

Good luck!

Now under TD Ameritrade, the ThinkOrSwim desktop platform has versions for Windows, Mac and Linux.( It ran fine on Ubuntu. ) With approval, you can trade forex and futures along with everything else. However TOS leaves a bit to be desired for daytrading. There is a DOM but no real open flow order information, just a spread and and filtered numbers for the current bid and ask but there are some nice features such as on chart adjustable OCO orders , limits and stops. One can feasibly trade on a 5min or more time chart but don't expect to scalp well within seconds and the commissions and fees are higher than average. But you can do pretty much everything as TOS was originally for options and stocks. Their java based platform has been criticized for performance and stability, but in the last year or so they've made a bunch of upgrades and possibly rewrites. Also, there is a TOS app for the iPhone and blackberry. The desktop can be trialed on the papermoney version even kept indefinitely with a new account with no funding, but it will only be working in a delayed mode. A funded account is required for the paper trading platform to be working in real time simulation.

TOS used to be quality... ever since AMTD, it just went down... same thing happened with AMTD bought Datek back then... AMTD is just the kiss of death to any brokerage that was decent before... the owners of TOS sold off because of the money they made, and in the process they killed a great brokerage..

I guess I don't think of the salesperson as a broker too much, and they are still not the same though, but that is just a point if view.

as to ibkr execution... I said it all depends on what you are trading... I say, if their execution was truly that poor, they wouldn't have so many customer funds.. even more than vfm... also, the value of the universal account is on being able to trade any asset class across any market from a single account with the best margin rate out there ... nothing to do with reporting, try trading options, equities or currency with optimus, better yet... try getting access to all product in eurex or liffe with optimus and let me know how that goes.

1) We are NOT only sales people at Optimus. I think that Optimus is only broker who developed auto username and passwords to a multitude of platforms that are using Rithmic. So we do our best to support customers with technology, and inside Optimus we have invested in infrastructure that would provide good customer service. This includes software, server, advanced phone systems, etc.
2) We try to compete fairly for customers business, and at the same time we know our platforms, technology, etc.

It's true, we only do futures but that keeps us busy enough without getting into other asset classes.
We do provide Eurex markets via CQG and hope to have it via Rithmic (Now Rithmic has all US markets)

Above all, at Optimus we do respect trader's choices when it comes to brokers, platforms, data feedetc. All we can do is just be our best and service the ones that have chosen to give us their business.

Matt
