Our server, running this website, is a dedicated Quad Xeon, 4x300GB 15K SAS RAID 5 with 3Ware 9690SA Hardware RAID, 12GB memory, with a dedicated 1Gb port.
Since I have a lot of virtualization experience with my former corporate job, and a lot of trading experience , I have considered starting a separate business venture to provide hosting to traders who want lower latency for automation or even discretionary trading via Remote Desktop (which can still be quite useful in many circumstances). There are a couple services out there that do this already, but they seem very over priced for the average user.
Agreed, as I wrote in my last post, mirus charges $350/month for their cheapest VM package with response time < 1ms. Please keep me informed if you decide to offer this service in the future.
@pepelucho: can you please tell us what is your ping from your $60/month VM and the exchange ?
I don't know yet what is an acceptable latency for sclaping bots, the lower the better, but below 5ms might be good enough for most of them.
advantagefutures.com sells also server colocation services in the Equinix Chicago and Frankfurt data centers. They have a good commissions structure if you do quantity which can be well negotiated. They offer wide range of platforms.
I dunno their hosting prices but they are very helpful people so go and drop a message if interested in.
Mike, would you care to elaborate on this further with regards to discretionary trading? Under what circumstances would you say that a VM residing close to the exchange and being accessed via Remote Desktop would be better than just running native software on a machine located in another city?
A lot of things in discretionary trading are done at the software level (platform) not at the exchange, like ATM, or auto-chase. With having your platform only 1ms from the exchange, instead of 100ms or 500ms or wherever you are, you will get far better queue positioning.
