Well said, we all have some damage caused thru childhood or life in general, it's just that most of us are blind to it. Usually, the greater the damage the more a person is oblivious to it, although the rest of us on the receiving end know all about it, you only have to see some of the trolls posts for proof of this. The relationship between a trader and the markets has many similarities to one between a codependant and a narcissist. rahulgopi has outlined the essential dynamics of a narcissistic relationship. I put to you these are the exact percieved behaviours that the market displays to unaware traders. Just as with a narcissist the market isn't even aware that you exist let alone care what happens to you. How many times do you see,"they ran my stops", if you weren't trying to control the market your stops wouldn't even have been there to be run, helplessness. And just like a narcissist the market will do what ever it wants and tough luck for anyone who gets in its way. No amount of trying, to force your will on the market will ever end in success, just like it's doomed to failure when dealing with a narcissist. At an emotional level your job is to remove this power over you from the narcissist and as a trader to remove it from the market. This won't stop the market doing whatever it wants, but more importantly will empower you to deal more effectively with it's unpredictable and often dangerous behaviours. More rules doesn't fix a narcissist and more rules doesn't change the market dynamics. Any meaningful change must come from within. Adapt or die.
Cheers John
I think that might just be me... those 4 feelings featured very prominently during my childhood. On top of that I' m already an ADD personality. The difference between my trading when Im relaxed and focused (a lot easier for me in very volatile markets) vs when Im impatient and fustrated is night and day. I' m really having roadblocks when it comes to managing my state... staying patient and in an " observing" state rather than a " doing" state where subconscioulsy Im just shouting at myself - next trade! next trade! You need to money! Its come to the point where I have realised that my performance is 100% tied to my psychology and at this point working on strategy/execution wont help until Ive got that under control.
Understanding yourself is just as important as understanding markets.
TickedOff , sorry to hear about your condition. I have few friends that are suffering from ADD, found relief by trying few of the items below. You may have tried them but listing for your reference.
3) mindfulness meditation : lot of people fail with mindfulness is when they try to control "quieting the mind" or thoughts and get upset when it is not that "quiet" as expected even after trying "hard". This by itself is causing stress and anxiety. It is very important not to try control anything as thoughts and feelings are temporary and they will pass. IT doesnt matter how long your mind was quiet ( 30 secs or 5 mins or what ever), whole idea is to sit and observe, be aware, NOT to control and judge. If one is not relaxed during meditation, then something is not right with the practice, usually stems from the understanding of the process and expectation of results.
4) healing techniques like Emotion code. Emotion code let one free energy from trapped emotions. Some people have found great relief by trying this. Since it is relatively cheap to try this, may worth trying few sessions.
Hope you find great progress with ADD and trading.
Thanks, I've given meditation a shot but I've heard you need to do it consistently every day for a couple of weeks or so for change to set it whereas I didn't really stick to a schedule. Developing a meditation routine will probs help quite a bit and I'll check out your other recommendations for sure. ADD definitely has its downsides but I don't consider it to be an illness or anything, it has its perks as well (creativity, fast information processing, hyperfocus at specific tasks that capture interest etc) and I felt that medication wasn't really helpful anyhow... never quite liked the idea of medication for ADD as if its something wrong. In my mind its kinda like trying to get someone who is naturally thin and lean to become a body builder where he would excel in sprinting.
Understanding yourself is just as important as understanding markets.
