I agree that keeping a journal and a trading log will do more for your trading then any thing else. I'm not that up on Excel or am I that great with computers for that matter. (Study trading and become a IT Tec)
I like to keep things simple and do so by keeping both a Trading Log and a Trading Journal. As for my log I use one from OTA that tracks all my trades in blocks of 25 so I can see things like Equity Growth Curve, Profit per Block, Average profit per Block, Win / Loss, Income / Expense averages, and Trading Reward Ratios. It allows me to place notes such as Reason for entry and exits, Errors Made and Corrective Action.
My Trading Journal is much more important to me and done with Microsoft Word and has become a novel at this point. I add screen shots of my trades each day along with what issues I am dealing with (Emotional and Technical) and how I am working to over come them. When I place an entry in the journal I explain what I did and why I did it. Things like did I plan the trade and follow my plan. Did I make any mistakes in the trade. I include my emotional feelings I had while waiting for my set up as well as how I felt doing the trade.
This was all very discouraging at first but now has become my greatest asset. I would think any trader that has kelp both logs and a journal for very long will tell you that they have came a long way by doing so.
I would tell all new want to be trades that it is the most important thing you can do to become successful and as time goes by it will become more and more detailed.
You will learn more about ones self then you ever thought you could.

1stly many thanks to VVHG for a great journal

Any recommendation on what version to run to get the full functionality i.e. the overview tab is not registering method or instrument updates (win loss / win loss ratio etc)

i've tried ver 4.3 and 4.5 on excel 2007 and 2010 but no luck

Hello Guys, Hi BM,

I am a small trader based in india, i maintain my excel journal very basic one. And decided to do analysis of it. While trying to reinvent the wheel i came across this thread and your journal. I fell in love and it has everything which i wanted to do. Big thanks to you and futures.io (formerly BMT) members.

I have some basic queries to start with. (ver 4,4 Latest)

1. Setting up commission
- Under Instrument list worksheet commission column.
- I currently have broker who charges 0.01% of contract size on each leg. So can you please suggest how can i feed commission column.

2.Point value, Tick value and Tick size.

Ex. I trade Silver (MCX) Lot Size 30 CMP 41,400 (INR) Min tick 1 INR.

So Point Value would be 30 and Tick Value would also be 30 which calculates tick size of 1 ( Is it correct ? )

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks futures.io (formerly BMT)

Hi @vvhg,
Thank you for all of your work on this project-very nice.
Maybe I have overlooked it(not uncommon).
Looking for the ability to have multiple accounts, If you have more than one futures account or a combination of futures acct., forex acct., stocks, options etc.
Does this exist in your creation?
Thanks in advance for any input/direction.

Just found this blog as i was looking for help with trading metrics, read about half this thread and just saw the latest product, simply amazing, just about enough analytics to test a fighter jet.

Much thanks for all the hard work thats gone into this project, vvhq, BM and everyone else that worked on it.
most likely take me a month to figure out half of what it can do.

Hi @vvhg,

Expect even more interest in this thread, as Big Mike referenced it as part of a FT71 webinar earlier today (see here).

On page 1, post #2 of this thread you offer a link to the latest version of the Journal, which points to page 82 and version Journal4.4.rar. I found a more recent version on page 85. Is it safe to assume that Journal4.5.rar is the most recent?

Thanks.

Anyone - can you post a couple of screenshots that show the latest release, I was looking for one earlier but couldn't find a current one.

Mike

Greetings:

From this I see that "Calc, part of the free OpenOffice.org office program suite, will also open XLSM files." I don't use OpenOffice, but hope this helps you.

Regards.

PS. Perhaps I'm ahead of myself here. The file offered here for download is in .RAR format, which is a file compression method. When you run this through one of the de-compression utilities (I use one called WinRAR) you're presented with the working file, which is in .xlsm format. And that should be able to work with OpenOffice, per the above.

I have a different spreadsheet that I got for using with Sierra Chart(see attached). the data is imported from Sierra Chart on the right side. I would like to add a few of my own columns that I would update from my notes
For example: Setup used, Supported reasons, Entry grade, execution grade, exit grade, emotions, error number etc.
Since you have much experience in Excel

Where would you suggest adding my additional fields ? i.e. to the right of AF (the last of SC data) or before N the start of SC data?
I want to add a list of valid values for Setup Used (1-9), Execution errors(1-9), Entry supported reasons(1-5). Much like your Instrument list sheet. Should I just add an additional sheet for each of these. Instead of new sheets, I was thinking of just text in the heading to explain the supported values
