I'm on a mission to improve my Excel trade journal.

I'd like to hear input on what metrics you guys measure in your journal. For instance:
  • Sharpe ratio
  • Expectancy
  • Win/Loss Dollar Ratio
  • Win Percentage
  • Dollar gain per trade put on
  • Account balance
  • Risk % per trade
  • Maximum drawdown
  • Realized MAE/MFE
  • Unrealized MFE (benchmark potential)

I was reading Brett's "Enhancing Traders Performance" book and it gave me the idea to consider categorizing days themselves, like uptrend, downtrend, reversal day, range bound, etc. I was wondering, do any of you guys do this and what have you found?

Mike

there is no doubt that you are correct, it should all be done as you outlined, I have not done so, I do journal all of the time now and I write it down in pen. But you can still document these as columns in excel and fill them in at the end of the day, it would really help. thanks for discussing this, I will try to do so. Gertraud

Just want to thank vvhg for all the work he has put into this! I am just trying to figure it out, but this spreadsheet has alot of functions in it that would probably take me years to figure out and implement!

OK, the options wouldn't be a problem, but I don't know how to calculate the stocks commissions....
So I decided to make a mix, now the user can chose to use auto calculation or manual entry for each instrument.

Be aware that this is a beta! If you find any errors, please report them to me.

Hi vvhg,

I am new to this forum. However, in this short time I have learnt a great deal from you guys. I went thru this string from the begining. I must appreciate yours coordinated effort and time dedicated to make this journal a great success. Thanks a lot. I also wish to thank Big Mike to bring such great minds together.
While on this subject I have one question regarding update "Journal 4.2 beta stock6" https://nexusfi.com/attachments/76966d1339413084. After this there has been another update "journal 4.5" This latest update does not have the option for stock, futures and commission %age.
Am I missing something. ???

Thanks again
Vks

Sorry for my late reply. I have not yet fixed it, narrowed it down to some Excel 2010 specific error though, in 2007 it works fine. Unfortunately I could not find anything on the internet regarding this error. I am pretty clueless at the moment as I am still on 07, so I can't test anything, but i'll get 10 soon and then look into it.

I have downloaded the newsest version, which is pretty impressive. I have some quick question:
- is the csv import is working in 4.4 (and if yes, than how can I reach it) or I have to add manually every trade (which is fine as well)
- My english is not the best, so MAE is stand for the biggest drawback during the trade correct? This number obviusly should smaller than the "init stop"
- Benchmark: This number is the best scenario to this trade, but only with following my trading rules.
- MFE2: This number is the dream scenario (which never happens ) meaning the best exit for the trade (ofc this number never smaller then the benchmark)
- G1,G2 : it is a grade for my entry and exit. Based on the rules, and not based on how it works or not

Thank you for your help in advance!

As I did not code the csv import you would have to ask @petrmac

well, it could be the same size as init stop if it stops out there, generally it is the amount the trade goes "under water"

yes, best theoretical exit prior to your exit

yes, this includes theoretical exits after your real exit, it is somewhat discretionary

that's how I use it

Thank you!
