First off thanks for creating this amazing spreadsheet and incredibly useful forum. I honestly didn't think it was possible to find a civil and helpful trading forum.

As a someone who trades options and stocks, I'd like to suggest that the commission field needs to be handled differently. Typically options are priced at a base rate plus a per options cost. Same thing for stocks in my Thinkorswim account.

The way I do it in my spreadsheet is to add a "commission" cost per trade and enter it manually with each trade.

I think I could make it selectable if the commission field is manual entry or automatically calculated, or it might be time to split it up into a version for futures and an other one for options/stocks....

I started playing around with it, but it would be helpful if you could provide example calculations, so i get the calculation steps 100% right.

Thanks,

For options it is: $2.95 base + $0.75 per contract then times 2 for opening and closing.

For stocks it is: .015 cents per share, with a $5 per "leg" minimum, with a $9.95 maximum.

I say "per leg" because I have 1 or 2 exits, so my trades have 2 or 3 "legs" therefore a per trade commissions can range from $10 to $29.85 and almost anything in between.

OK, the options wouldn't be a problem, but I don't know how to calculate the stocks commissions....
So I decided to make a mix, now the user can chose to use auto calculation or manual entry for each instrument.

Be aware that this is a beta! If you find any errors, please report them to me.

Great journal... I do have one suggestion. I like to take screenshots of my entries and exits. It would be nice to have 3 or so columns where you could put links (either to files or web pages) so you could easily view your screenshots of the trade. Really all that would have to be done is to add the columns and then let the user insert the link.

Just an idea... but still very nice work.

Can you explain how to use manual entry of the commissions on the instrument tab? All I can see is that it accepts a % as a round trip value.

Thank you,

Jon

The manual entry doesn't use the instrument tab for commissions. So you only have to fill out the other stuff like tick size and point value, valid from/to....
When when you enter a trade for an instrument that uses manual commissions, just go to the commissions column on journal tab ( it says manual in that case) and fill the commission manually by overwriting the formula. The cell is automatically unprotected in that case. If you later should change the instrument back to an automatically calculated one, the manually entered value will be replaced with the original formula.

Would it be perhaps a good idea to use the thoughts column for that? If you don't paste the link into the cell but insert a hyperlink via excel menu the cell will act like a link so that you could still write sth else into the cell. Of course this would only do good for one link, not three, but perhaps it would be a solution to keep lets say three screenshots at the same location. Btw, have you looked at onenote, it seems to be quite well suited for what you want to do.

P.S. I don't want to add a column as this causes huge issues with the migration tool...

Yeah... I've used OneNote before... I currently use Evernote right now to store screenshots and my comments on them. However as I was reviewing my journal, I found some trades that I wanted to look at to see how I could improve them (if possible). So ideally it would be handy to review the spreadsheet, identify trades you want to look at in more detail, and then just click the link bring up the screenshot of the trade.

This got me thinking that I could use Evernote's Note Links. I could put all my screenshots into a note, and then get the note link and put that in the Excel spreadsheet. That way you would only need one link for all the screenshots and it would also link to my journal comments as well. I could use the comments column for that because all of my comments would be in the note anyway. That's probably a better idea than my previous one.

I had finally some time to update the importer.
The main new feature I added is the ability to import also the trades made by ATM strategy.
I refactored the way the trades are grouped: now I group the trades based on the entry time. Whenever there is a trade with same entry time it is added as another car.

So the program should now meaningfully group the trades from strategies and manual trading alike.

It exports to an older version of journal (still probably some link problem in V4). But there is a workaround: save to a new file and then import from the journal v 4:-)

No matter what I do I get an error "string was not recognized as a valid Date Time". I use the format DD/MM/YYYY in Ninja, so maybe you are checking for the USA format of MM/DD/YYYY or something different. Can this be fixed to recognize different date formats.
