A great 2-part video reprising the concept of how parts of our brain can shut down in response to stress, and what we can do about it. Courtesy of noobforlyfe.

Thanks for this video Lance. Breathing is very important and when its equally paced, you enable yourself to be at best physiologically, providing you with a better cognitive attention

Here is a two part tedx talk for those who are interested more into this. Part one goes into explanation as to how your breathing and emotions impact your cognitive abilities. Dr. Alan Watkins was a prominent neuroscientist and coming from a neuroscience education myself. We often went deeper into the more research parts of his work in our courses.

Anyhow, part 2 of this talk goes more in detail about how to calm your mind to allow you to be 'brilliant' every day.

I've shared it somewhere sometime back, but will link it once again for any readers on this thread.

For Women?

Have you come across any that are for Women? I've been searching and haven't really found much.

I love the likes of Alexander Elder on psych cause he does not mess around.

But I've stepped a way for a period of time to focus on family as being tired and hormonal when you are trying to conceive or being pregnant or feeding a new being are a real mind eff and not the best head space for trading. But I would love to see how others manage that. I'm slowly going back to trading now that baby is 6 months old and we're getting on more of a regular schedule and the hormones settled. Still the neurology of being a woman and a trader are akin roller coaster ride in total darkness!

I personally believe in attaining peace by doing things that make me calm. I get that when i meditate early morning, complete silence in the house, and get to hear chirping birds, with an early morning breeze. Fills freshness into me.

It's definitely a tough journey and especially as a mother of a newborn. Psychology is a complicated subject as it doesn't apply for one advice for all. We are all wired differently and so with that we will automatically have a different psychological functioning. There are techniques that can help you with being more calm and being physiologically healthy is the best way to maintain healthy levels of all sorts. I'm not saying you're not active or anything, just saying to do activities that bring you calmness and peace before the little one wakes up.hehe.

Whether its meditation or yoga or exercise, the vehicle isn't as important, but what's important is to do something that invites inner peace & bliss. For me its meditation and exercise. One great thing is, none of these two activities are gender dependent.

I can imagine the erratic schedule as I've personally had twin nephews grow up right in my room since first few months. Whenever we don't get enough sleep, it screws everything over (and I've had ton of those halfway through the night loud crying alarms), but hopefully with a more regular schedule down the line, you'll be able to come into your own rhythm and schedule.

I am not aware of any individual with the particular set of traits you're looking for, but because we all function uniquely different, psychologically and physiologically. It may not bring similar results, but what will is defining your own set of routine that stimulates a desired state of mind that you seek.

All the best to your trading journey.

John

I think that this is one of the best and most enlightening videos I have watched in a very long time.
Heres the chart he drew for anyone interested. You want to try and stay in the green zone as best you can. This can be achieved by being aware of states we commonly ignore (males especially) which are your feeling and emotions. Once you are aware of the different states you are in, you can then take steps to address them. One technique is proper breathing .

Its interesting that this video popped up today because it just so happens that I was reading through trader coach 101 and summarising one of the chapters for my personal diary. Here is my summary:

The problem: The relief you feel when you exit a position early outweighs the objective consideration of that trade. ie. you cut your opportunities short to get that momentary feeling of relief. Other times these patterns are subtle and if you dont know what you are responding to (the cause) you cannot shape a diffferent response pattern (the effect). You might push aside things that are bothering you, or procrastinate on a chore, but this leaves a lingering negative mood because you know you have unfinished business still to deal with.

Why? Subtle mood and energy shifts can affect your decision making. Hunger, being tired, not enough sun, loneliness, irritation etc. affect your ability to process information from the charts. What you know in one state of mind could be completely different in another state of mind. For example when youre tired, irritable and distracted you dont want to process the bigger picture but instead take stabs at impulsive trades responding to recent price action but when you are well rested you have patience and can synthesise the bigger picture and end up taking much better trades. Frustrtion can compel you to seek gratification from trading c ausing you to overtrade and make bad decisions in a stimulus/response (cause/effect) manner.

Solution: Track your physical and mental state daily. Alertness, energy levels, sufficient sleep, feeling depressed/happy?

Thanks @Grantx

What I thought was especially enlightening in the video was the fact that, when our brain shuts down, we don't realize it has shut down, in other words, we are under the illusion we are still functioning as before - we are completely unaware of the change in mental state.

That's why, when the 'moment' has passed (typically a losing trade or similar event) and we mostly return to our normal selves, the first thing we ask is 'why the heck did I do that?'.

I have seen this happen time and time again - not only in trading - I have seen people transform, it's like something else takes over - it's downright scary.

But being aware of the danger of falling into the trap is a start, I suppose.

Thats my standard response just with more colourful language.
Anyhoo. Did a search for some some of this miracle DHEA stuff he mentions and of course you need a prescription for it because anything that might optimise performance has to be regulated by our rigid uptight lawmakers. Cant have the unwashed masses feeling good about things ...we might riot or something. Closest I can find is something called Pregnenolone off of Amazon which to be honest doesnt sound like something a male should be taking.
The search continues.

DHEA is regulated as an anabolic steroid in most countries, although not in the US, due to odd exceptions in US drug laws.

It's a natural hormone that is a precursor to the production of both estrogen and testosterone in the body (both men and women produce both estrogen and testosterone, just in very different amounts.) It is chemically a steroid, which is not automatically "bad." But as a hormone, there is a question whether it is a good idea to take it into your body without knowing what its effects might be.

It has been tried as a means to improve athletic performance by boosting testosterone (and thus building muscle, it is hoped.) It is not clear whether it does or not, but most or all athletic organizations worldwide that do drug tests have banned it, perhaps just in case.

A few excerpts from the Wikipedia article (DHEA is also called "Prasterone" when referring to medical or supplemental use):

Quoting
Prasterone [DHEA] is produced naturally in the human body, but the long-term effects of its use are largely unknown.[26][27] In the short term, several studies have noted few adverse effects....

As a hormone precursor, there have been reports of side effects possibly caused by the hormone metabolites of prasterone.[27][32]

It is not known whether prasterone is safe for long-term use. Some researchers believe prasterone supplements might actually raise the risk of breast cancer, prostate cancer, heart disease, diabetes,[27] and stroke. Prasterone may stimulate tumor growth in types of cancer that are sensitive to hormones, such as some types of breast, uterine, and prostate cancer.[27] Prasterone may increase prostate swelling in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), an enlarged prostate gland.[26]

Prasterone is a steroid hormone. High doses may cause aggressiveness, irritability, trouble sleeping, and the growth of body or facial hair on women.[26] It also may stop menstruation and lower the levels of HDL ("good" cholesterol), which could raise the risk of heart disease.[26] Other reported side effects include acne, heart rhythm problems, liver problems, hair loss (from the scalp), and oily skin. It may also alter the body's regulation of blood sugar.

Also:

Quoting
Sports and athletics

Prasterone is a prohibited substance under the World Anti-Doping Code of the World Anti-Doping Agency,[61] which manages drug testing for Olympics and other sports.

From the more technical article on DHEA as a bodily hormone:

Quoting
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), also known as androstenolone, is an endogenous steroid hormone.[2][5] It is one of the most abundant circulating steroids in humans,[6] in whom it is produced in the adrenal glands,[7] the gonads, and the brain,[8] where it functions as a metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of the androgen and estrogen sex steroids.[5][9] However, DHEA also has a variety of potential biological effects in its own right, binding to an array of nuclear and cell surface receptors,[10] and acting as a neurosteroid and neurotrophin.[11]

In addition to its role as a natural hormone, DHEA is used as an over-the-counter supplement and medication; for information on DHEA as a supplement or medication, see the prasterone article.

Now, I have not yet viewed the video and so I don't know what is said about the stuff there. I'll take a look soon.

I would say that playing with your personal chemistry can be tricky. Now, of course, there are a lot of things that affect your chemistry (beer comes to mind ) that are not all that bad, so experimentation is up to you.

The fact that you would be banned from competition if you tested positive in an athletic drug test may, for some, be a plus , but might also be a minus. Being informed is important, that's all I would say.

Bob.

Thanks for the info bob. All I need to know is where I can get it in bulk and does it come in liquid form for faster absorption? Sounds like just the schizz I need - I was instantly sold on it when he dropped key phrases like 'miracle drug' and 'banned'

Well, go to a country where it is not banned. You'll probably have trouble getting it shipped to a UK address, but a person can usually get whatever they want if they work at it.

I may have overstated how extensively it is regulated:

Quoting
Subsequently, prasterone once again became available over-the-counter as a dietary supplement in the United States following the passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994.[3] Conversely, it has remained banned as a supplement in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.

(Quoted from the same Wikipedia article.)

So there are lots of places to turn to.

Will it really improve your mood or mental function? Don't know.

Bob.
