They're supposed to be good. Clearly help with sedentary life, which of course is one of the bane of trading.

I also think they would force people to move more: if you're sitting you can stay in the same position for hours, but if you're standing your body forces you to shift every few minutes, so more calorie-burning.

A few years ago I also started hearing about treadmill desks. Put it simply they are just a flat surface on top of a regular treadmill with a PC on top, and then you walk slowly as you work.

They were hailed as a miracle but I don't think they took off that much.

I've never tried one but I figure it'd be hard, especially for a trader, because of the risk of clicking the wrong thing and the related adverse financial effect.

This video gives you an idea, but there is only one guy who is walking properly slowly (as they should). All the others walk insanely fast. You can't work that way.

Cheers Mike, yes indeed, ergonomics are key. Well my wrist is fine, everything else, totally screwed

I developed a desk system inspired by the Minbari race beds on Babylon 5 for when my back was healing.

Too much lying flat was causing atrophy and affecting my heart but I had to distribute the weight. A standard chair was no no good.

90% similar to this model but with larger table and lots of USB portable Asus displays. Oh and a strap in case you fall asleep and fall off turned out to be a good idea.

Somehow I missed the posts before so adding

I've done this. Its a little hard to focus but fine when keeping an eye on a swing that is going to take a while. My new place will have the pool and gym in my trading area. Some details to work out but I'm hoping two 4k projectors that re-position to three screens will let me move in my work space.

@Rory , I have had chronic back pain for many years-- in my case a prolapsed disc, so not as serious as your injury.
Some things that have helped :
I use a TENS machine sometimes. Just a small handheld one. I find it very helpful when the pain gets acute. It breaks the cycle of pain>tension>pain, giving relief.
For a few years now I've been using a mini trampoline every day. Gentle hopping for 30 mins. The combination of brief weightlessness and compression feels great and is good for the core.
I realize that my condition is different from yours, so the above may not be appropriate for you.
I also do most of my trading in a lying position, not least because I have to wake at 5.30am here on the West Coast.
Best of luck.

Cheers Stillgreen, the trampoline is a new one.

I do calisthenics fairly often, its gentle but its surprisingly potent. I've just ordered one of these https://www.amazon.com/ComforTrac-Home-Lumbar-Traction-Device/dp/B00NWV46OA on advice from someone who has similar multiple disc compression.

I'm sure there are cheaper equivalents of course.

@Rory , another machine you might consider :

https://www.amazon.com/Vitalizer-Machine-USJ106-Relief--Weight-Fibromyalgia/dp/B000N2YTCU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1475034580&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=chi+machine&psc=1

I haven't used one myself, but know a couple of people who say it is a great therapy for the whole spine.

When you get your traction device, please post your experience with it.

Here is a desk that can switch between a traditional one and a standing one with the push of a button

I shall though its going to be a couple of weeks as I have to wait for a friend to come from Miami. The important thing as I have three problem areas, top middle and bottom will be not to make one worse. If I don't like the unit, a guy here wants it.

A great thing about Medellin is the consistent temperature range. Just moving here from Europe eliminated a lot of my aches and pains away. The 'City of Eternal Spring'.

I will say, if anyone does need physio and a holiday combo, there are lots of great places here. To go to the same clinic that the footballers go to, 1 hour sessions were costing around ~$20 for a full hour with a superb therapist.

A doctor friend of mine suggested I watch this video for my back pain....I was very skeptical but results don't seem to lie.....the guy was a paratrooper with multiple jumps that over time destroyed his back.....its pretty remarkable...

Its an good idea for some certainly. I've decided to lose weight which might help with my standing tolerance.

With trading, I've put on some pounds as I'm at work in bed... Medellin people are remarkably thin and healthy and I've had a few "friendly comments" lately... grrr... haha. Michael Moore on the scalper's thread is 60+, a rock climber and thin as a whippet so I must summon motivation. The lumbar device I'm ordering will I hope correct my spine after exercise.

Edit: @PandaWarrior thank you, I just saw the video you posted while writing above, coincidence! I'm not quite that overweight but certainly there is more I can do.
