Hi, I wanted to create a thread on and about "the game" psychology.
To all of us that love the game. To learn to play and to keep learning the game!

Psychology Notes
+My own mind gym
+Enthusiasm and mental edge are the keys to success
+Trading is simple, the real work is in preparation
+The mind continuously records everything.
+Learn to use the mind constructively
+Learn to deal with adversity
+My mental training enhance trading performance, improves productivity and adds to trading enjoyment
+Achieving inner excellence is a process, time + effort
+What i think affects how i feel and perform
+I must learn how to focus on the task and not let negative thoughts intrude
+My mind can only concentrate on one thing at a time
+My Actions follow thoughts and images
+Know my personal keys to success, know my performance keys to success
+I choose how to think and change my performance

The Price speculator evolves into an automation which takes note of a situation, weighs it, decides upon a course and gives an order.
There is no quickening of the pulse, no nerves, no hopes or fears. The result produces neither elation or depression.

There is equanimity before, during and after the trade.
e·qua·nim·i·ty
ekwəˈnimədē/
noun
noun: equanimity

mental calmness, composure, and evenness of temper, especially in a difficult situation.
"she accepted both the good and the bad with equanimity"
synonyms: composure, calm, level-headedness, self-possession, coolheadedness, presence of mind; serenity, tranquility, phlegm, imperturbability, equilibrium; poise, assurance, self-confidence, aplomb, sangfroid, nerve; informalcool
"he confronted the daily crises with equanimity"

antonyms: anxiety

The price speculator must be self reliant. A dependent person, whose judgment hangs upon others, will find himself swayed by a thousand outside influences. At critical points his judgment will be useless.
He must be able to say : " The facts are these; the resulting indications are these; therefore I will do thus and so."
Next he must be familiar with technicalities of the market, so that every little incident affecting prices will be given due weight.
He should know the history of the instrument he is speculating; the ways of the market makers; be able to measure the effect of news and rumors and charts; know when and in what instrument is best to trade.
Measure the forces behind the moving price; know when to cut a loss and take a profit.

Trader must study the various swings and know where the market stands; must recognize the inherent weakness or strength in prices; understand the basis or logic of the movements.
Trader should recognize the turning points of the market; see in his mind's eye what is happening on the floor.
Trader must have the nerve to stand a series of losses; persistence to keep him at the work during adverse periods; self control to avoid over trading; a phlegmatic disposition to ballast and balance at all times.
For perfect concentration as a protection from the tips, gossip and another influences. Trader should , if possible seclude himself.
The work requires such delicate balance of the faculties that the slightest influence either way may throw the results against the trader.

He may say; "nothing influences me," but unconsciously it does affect his judgment to know that another trader is bearish at a point where he thinks price ought to be bought.
The mere thought, "He may be right" has a deterrent influence upon him; he hesitates; the opportunity is lost.
No matter how the market goes from that point, he missed a cog and his mental machinery is thrown out of gear.
Silence, therefore, is a much needed lubricant to the traders mind.

Money is made in trading by anticipating what is coming -> not by waiting till it happens and going with the crowd.

There is no sense in mincing words over this matter, nor in holding out false encouragement to people who are looking for an easy,
drop a penny in the slot way of making money. Trading is hard work, hence those who are mentally lazy need not apply.

Mental Toughness and Purple Elephants

March 02, 2016

I heard a lecture last night given by a hypnotist who specializes in Achieving Mental Toughness for dressage riders. As is the case with many lessons on peak performance, almost every word could have equally been applied to trading. In showing dressage, preparation, self talk, self discipline and having a plan are everything. Yet there are uncontrollable variables too, such as the mind of the horse you are riding. The horse might be tense or nervous. The footing might be sloppy. The weather might be poor. It is a rare occurrence to achieve a mistake free performance when riding a dressage test.
(Sounds like a typical trading day?)
The subconscious mind is 88% brain function based on habits, emotions, long-term memory and self preservation. Your subconscious mind is like a computer hard drive. In order to create and sustain change, you must tap into the subconscious 88% of your brain.
You can access your subconscious through relaxation, visualization, imagination and hypnosis. It is all under your control. The subconscious does not know the difference between reality and imagination. You are what you think you are – which means that in order to change, you have to change the way you think. Your thoughts then create physical reactions. Your imagination is more powerful than knowledge.
What happens in your life is purely neutral. It becomes positive or negative only by the way you respond to it.
To be mentally tough is a science. Know it. Believe it.
The lecturer had a list of 9 tips to achieve mental toughness:
– Enjoy protein. (I thought that was funny to be first on the list, but is an athlete going to give their best performance after having eaten a donut and coffee?) Your physical state has a lot to do with your mental state. Make sure you get protein before you ride and show = make sure you get protein before you start your trading day.
– Focus on Solutions, not the problem. Create a mindset where you will find a solution and then the brain will produce a solution when asked. Now here is what was interesting: Solutions in the brain come from words. We only function off words…and this includes positive self-talk.
– Mental image/Role Modeling. Choose a role model and make sure it is one you like. You have to like what you want in order to achieve it. Monkey See, Monkey do – we mirror role models.
– Let go of anxiety. Is the fear real or imagined? It is hard to be relaxed unless you are in control of it. If the fear is real, you can deal with it. Let go of imagined fears.
– Avoid taking things personally. Go back to the land of neutral, no judgments.
– Learn self discipline with a positive attitude. Attitude is a choice. Focus on your self talk and stay positive. Words are what we need to consciously be aware of. The subconscious mind takes words literally. Self discipline is speech habit. “I can control what I think or hear”.
– Negative energy creates more negative energy. How do you control this? Be present with “what is”. Here is an exercise: Elevate what the problem is in your mind. Then shrink it down. Put it in your hand and blow it away. For example, you fear putting a trade on and having it move against you. Imagine that problem as big as the room, even bigger. Now mentally shrink it down to the size of a postage stamp. Picture yourself placing that postage stamp on your hand and blow it away.
– Make a Plan. In dressage, that includes a Pre-Ride Routine, Pre-Ride homework, and then a Riding Routine on show day. The need for a plan for trading is obvious. But here is what was important in sports performance: the plan must be written. If you write it down the brain sees it. The brain needs a reading. Mental plans simply do not hold up.
– Have an Attitude of Gratitude. This strengthens your own self image. Put a smiley face on the mirror. What is wrong with using silly tricks? Try them all …
An Attitude of Gratitude is about building a positive emotional bank. It keeps you centered and creates good energy. Positive energy and happiness will ultimately show up in your performance.
– More Words on Self Discipline: Self discipline can be considered a type of selective training, creating new habits of thought, action and speech. It can also be task oriented and selective. Self discipline is positive effort, not denial The easiest way to think about self discipline is WORDS. You can choose the words you say to yourself. So, it is a discipline in selecting your words and monitoring your thoughts.
– The law of attraction only works if you have no negatives. Say: “I will stalk my trades first” instead of “I will not make impulsive, reactive trades”. In the latter, all the brain hears is, “Make impulsive reactive trades.” It does not recognize words like “not” or “won’t”.
You can not have peak performance if there is negative energy flowing though you. If you can’t replace it with positive energy, replace it with a purple elephant. A Purple Elephant image goes a long ways

Shoshin: This Zen Concept Will Help You Stop Being a Slave to Old Beliefs | James Clear

Shoshin: This Zen Concept Will Help You Stop Being a Slave to Old Beliefs
By James Clear | Life Lessons, Self-Awareness, Self-Improvement
I played baseball for 17 years of my life. During that time, I had many different coaches and I began to notice repeating patterns among them.

Coaches tend to come up through a certain system. New coaches will often land their first job as an assistant coach with their alma mater or a team they played with previously. After a few years, the young coach will move on to their own head coaching job where they tend to replicate the same drills, follow similar practice schedules, and even yell at their players in a similar fashion as the coaches they learned from. People tend to emulate their mentors.

This phenomenon—our tendency to repeat the behavior we are exposed to—extends to nearly everything we learn in life.

Your political or religious beliefs are mostly the result of the system you were raised in. People raised by Catholic families tend to be Catholic. People raised by Muslim families tend to be Muslim. Although you may not agree on every issue, your parents political attitudes tend to shape your political attitudes. The way we approach our day-to-day work and life is largely a result of the system we were trained in and the mentors we had along the way. At some point, we all learned to think from someone else. That’s how knowledge is passed down.

Here’s the hard question: Who is to say that the way you originally learned something is the best way? What if you simply learned one way of doing things, not the way of doing things?

Consider my baseball coaches. Did they actually consider all of the different ways of coaching a team? Or did they simply mimic the methods they had been exposed to? The same could be said of nearly any area in life. Who is to say that the way you originally learned a skill is the best way? Most people think they are experts in a field, but they are really just experts in a particular style.

In this way, we become a slave to our old beliefs without even realizing it. We adopt a philosophy or strategy based on what we have been exposed to without knowing if it’s the optimal way to do things.

Shoshin: The Beginner’s Mind
There is a concept in Zen Buddhism known as shoshin, which means “beginner’s mind.” Shoshin refers to the idea of letting go of your preconceptions and having an attitude of openness when studying a subject.

When you are a true beginner, your mind is empty and open. You’re willing to learn and consider all pieces of information, like a child discovering something for the first time. As you develop knowledge and expertise, however, your mind naturally becomes more closed. You tend to think, “I already know how to do this” and you become less open to new information.

There is a danger that comes with expertise. We tend to block the information that disagrees with what we learned previously and yield to the information that confirms our current approach. We think we are learning, but in reality we are steamrolling through information and conversations, waiting until we hear something that matches up with our current philosophy or previous experience, and cherry-picking information to justify our current behaviors and beliefs. Most people don’t want new information, they want validating information.

The problem is that when you are an expert you actually need to pay more attention, not less. Why? Because when you are already familiar with 98 percent of the information on a topic, you need to listen very carefully to pick up on the remaining 2 percent.

As adults our prior knowledge blocks us from seeing things anew. To quote zen master Shunryo Suzuki, “In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few.”

How to Rediscover Your Beginner’s Mind
Here are a few practical ways to rediscover your beginner’s mind and embrace the concept of shoshin.

Let go of the need to add value. Many people, especially high achievers, have an overwhelming need to provide value to the people around them. On the surface, this sounds like a great thing. But in practice, it can handicap your success because you never have a conversation where you just shut up and listen. If you’re constantly adding value (“You should try this…” or “Let me share something that worked well for me…”) then you kill the ownership that other people feel about their ideas. At the same time, it’s impossible for you to listen to someone else when you’re talking. So, step one is to let go of the need to always contribute. Step back every now and then and just observe and listen. For more on this, read Marshall Goldsmith’s excellent book What Got You Here Won’t Get You There (audiobook).

Let go of the need to win every argument. A few years ago, I read a smart post by Ben Casnocha about becoming less competitive as time goes on. In Ben’s words, “Others don’t need to lose for me to win.” This is a philosophy that fits well with the idea of shoshin. If you’re having a conversation and someone makes a statement that you disagree with, try releasing the urge to correct them. They don’t need to lose the argument for you to win. Letting go of the need to prove a point opens up the possibility for you to learn something new. Approach it from a place of curiosity: Isn’t that interesting. They look at this in a totally different way. Even if you are right and they are wrong, it doesn’t matter. You can walk away satisfied even if you don’t have the last word in every conversation.

Tell me more about that. I have a tendency to talk a lot (see “Providing Too Much Value” above). Every now and then, I’ll challenge myself to stay quiet and pour all of my energy into listening to someone else. My favorite strategy is to ask someone to, “Tell me more about that.” It doesn’t matter what the topic is, I’m simply trying to figure out how things work and open my mind to hearing about the world through someone else’s perspective.

Assume that you are an idiot. In his fantastic book, Fooled by Randomness, Nassim Taleb writes, “I try to remind my group each week that we are all idiots and know nothing, but we have the good fortune of knowing it.” The flaws discussed in this article are simply a product of being human. We all have to learn information from someone and somewhere, so we all have a mentor or a system that guides our thoughts. The key is to realize this influence.

We are all idiots, but if you have the privilege of knowing that, then you can start to let go of your preconceptions and approach life with the openness of a beginner.

Shoshin.

"she confronted the daily crises with equanimity"

antonyms: anxiety

Ross Hook is charting the H-H's or L-L's and therefore creating the 123 directional price movement.
1st trade of the day created on a 30min chart for a possible target at 2136.50/ After hours velocity can be very very slow.
Kept the stop loss pretty tight, perhaps too tight! Small profits to start a new trading day.

the price established 123 RH, but the point 1 could not hold the price.
Was very near being stopped out but the cooler mind prevailed!
three lots two intended targets
planning my trades = trading my plan

Rh correction # 3 on the 30m GC chart.
Also my entry was not a good one, therefore only 2 lots of potential sacrifice to the market!
Did not get the intended target, but did protect my 2 lot investment.

The price was indicating about the weakness of buyers.
That weakness then produced a small price movement worthy of a decent small Globex trade.
My entry was not the best, but the protective stop loss was alright

Watched the trade-vid, nice music - and nice trading! This is pretty much the same as i do and what i believe to be the simple key(at least for me). Watch S/R levels and play the gaps between them. I prefer P&F style charts as they paint a cleaner picture for me personally. 1 for short term and more importantly one for longer term. I always want to have my direction make sense on a bigger timeframe(like 120, 240min).

One thing i noticed is that she came close to your target then took a breather. Whenever she pushes for a new low or high, she tends to pop and often make a leg, but your target was sitting close to the previous push down. So could have milked it a bit more- as you can see in your vid it popped +5 ticks pst your target within seconds

Keep up the good work, you're on the right path imho In sim you may want to start experimenting with leveraging risk with adding more contracts on pulls back up, then selling them on pushes your way. Trading gets so much more interesting once you can add a few cars Just dont rush it before your accountsize can handle it

Good luck!

Small scalper. The sellers simply were not strong enough. Will reorganize a bit later for a stronger 2nd attempt.

Another day in the shark tank. Small scalper on crude. Sadly, became sidetracked and forgot to respond to a larger chart frame sell signal.

The Ross Hook presented a nice AbCd pattern. Alas, uncaptured pattern. The small account risk management appliance did not allow for the full capture

I guess a break below your resistance band for a short? or above for a long?

Yes sir! 3.524 is my main resistance level!
For as long as the price is below that level, the sellers have my vote of confidence
3.378 is a nice target price for Monday
(Friday's Low)

And if the sellers are strong enough, then the 3.188 would be this week's target price.

1. Forgive everything and everyone (the past)
2. Feel that you are enough (write the future)
3. Be present

@zmaj can i ask how you trade NG? Is it more day or swing trade? i am more of a technical day trader but i have a friend who is more of a pattern.. wait for setup swing trader and he does that for all ...what about u? for me its more look at 15/30 minute and take the entry on my smaller 256 volume chart based on a bunch of conditions coming together

15/30 is my trigger point 120/360 are the mid points and the daily/weekly representing the price trends.
If the price trends well then most definitely i become the swing trader. Otherwise i just trade intraday.
I'm continuously a student of cycles + patterns they absolutely fascinate me to no end.

Tuesday daily swing set up. AbCd pattern. b= 50.71 and d= 49.14
Crude established a daily pattern that could possibly instigate plus 200 to 350 ticks this week.
For as long as the 53.24 rejects the buyers advances the pattern is active.

most of the time, intraday cycles and patterns work best. + 21 on this small 15m AbCd pattern.
Sellers ran out of steam, everyone closed shop and went home.

CL 15min 123 set up. (failed) Good honest struggle to find a decent entry
Not enough buyers to help a brother out. Small account, risk management.
((The original video was way to long to upload, had to edit, a lot, and i'm quite terrible at editing. ))

Risking by David Viscount

To laugh is to risk appearing fool.
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self.
To place your ideas, your dreams, before a crowd is to risk their loss.
To live is to risk dying. To hope is to risk despair.
To try is to risk failure.
But risks must be taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.
The person, who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, and is nothing.
They may avoid suffering and sorrow, but they cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love....live.
Only a person who risks is free.
