Curious what a roughly opposite story would bring.
"member ignored all advice and nearly doubled his account after only one week!"
Fear and greed.
I have approximate answers, possible beliefs and different degrees of certainty of different things. But I'm not absolutely sure of anything and there are many things i don't know anything about.
Failure is entertainment, when you see someone fail it's usually in all caps, blatant, and in a ball of fire. People love to see accidents on the side of the road. It's a natural reaction to slow down to get a glimpse.

90+% of traders fail. Failures want to know that they are not alone so they read about other failures for comfort. The successful traders that visit the thread have likely had failure in the past and are there out of empathy; or, for those who actually will post something, they may be there to lend a helping hand or encouraging word to pick up a fallen brother.
I wonder if it's the same reason people watch shows like Jeremy Kyle or Jerry Springer - it makes them feel better about themselves. It's not just 'me' that has a bad time, at least I'm not that person. Time to gloat in some else's misfortune.
Also, I wonder if it an excuse for not trying yourself - here is this other persons experience, they tried and failed, I would be the same so 'why bother'?
There's a hypothesis that when people see (or read about) someone else's sufferings, they feel more comfortable. Same reason behind horror movies popularity.
I've definitely noticed the media aspect of it. My wife and I were just talking about this. So recently there was a series on CBS called "Fix it and finish it", in which Anthony Sabato Jr. would surprise someone at their house and spend the day completely revamping some unfinished living space in or around their home.
Now this was definitely a feel good show, Anthony always seemed to have a sincere heart and passion for helping people, and the people he helped were always very appreciative.
So what happens? After a few months the show is cut, and now we have some crime line B.S. which is even darker than the regular news and the celebrity news garbage that it plays between. Very disappointing.
I have always thought how great it would be to have a news channel that just focused on the good in the world, and how some are stepping up to the plate and doing great things selflessly for others everyday. But as someone pointed out, that isn't what sells.
We are much more eager to look for signs that we are better off than someone else. Oh someone is failing at something? Oh let me check that out. Oh man he really screwed up, at least I'm not that bad........
It's just sad, and I do think there are a lot of commonalities with where we are headed as a society, and what @Big Mike has brought up.
But there is a solution: speak up for what you believe is right, and be the change you want to see in the world. A good positive attitude can be infectious as well.
People are also attracted to success, but they don't talk as much as those attracted to failure. There's not much people can say when they see someone doing well because there's no advice to really give them and nothing to say other than congratulating them.
In trading especially you'll very rarely ever see someone bragging because anyone who does really well for an extended period of time knows the treachery of a draw down and how important it is not to get cocky. Yeah some people try to save face from time to time sharing great trades, but it's not as prevalent and explosive as someone who is blowing up.

Everyone should find his trading style
Everyone should go through some of the failures
There is no short cut, reading about success and failure, might help on some of the generic
pitfalls, but nothing replaces real live school...
Knowing yourself... the traps... strengths and weaknesses
and you get a long way already with that
provided that you learn the basics that are for everyone the same
