I haven't read this entire thread, I apologize. Not willing to put in the time.

But isn't this 10,000 hours number from Malcolm Gladwell, or the likes?

From the perspective of Japanese culture, where they place unbelievable emphasis on training, training, and more training, the proverbial saying is "It takes three years to learn a new tool." In whatever trade.

You wanna be a sushi chef? Ok, give me three years on the job, 12 hours a day. I guess that's about 10,000 hours.

First and foremost, I saw this on the Jigsaw site. So kudo's and lawsuits go to them ....

The question keeps coming up, and as usual, the quote, is misquoted, over and over again.

My apologies if this is posted in the thread somewhere.

I am interested in this subject, and thought this pertinent.

Head up and keep your stick on the ice!

This reminds me of the motorcycle safety course. They take people who have never ridden before and make them road ready within 2-3 days.

I would say the first 20 hours of anything are the most important. I believe this is also true because it embeds beliefs and habits that will become harder and harder to break.

I was just about to leave this site for the afternoon when I saw a reference to this post and watched the video.

I am quite musical in that I like to sing, go to karaoke, sing in a recreational choir...but I always wanted to play a musical instrument. I tried harmonica, took lessons but gave it up because I could only toot the damn thing....I want to wail my emotions...not toot...but I could not bend a note for the life of me.

I thought of a uke because my father learned how to play it so it was ironic to see this used in this video.

I really believe in the 10,000 hours rule(?) to be among the best at something. It makes sense to me. To play chess takes only 15 mins to learn how the pieces move but I doubt a 20hour study is going to get you far in the world of chess.... opera singer/voice training or any detailed endeavor takes more than 20 hours to REALLY learn the craft.... it applies to trading too IMHO. You see many wonderkin on sites that sound like they know everything there is to know about trading....but it takes time and practice to learn it and 20 hours does not do it for me.

Having said that though, for something of lesser importance, that 20hour rule he has would demonstrate to you whether or not you have the necessary to be very good at something. That IS important in my view because it is a relatively short period of time to be exposed to something new and you could judge whether or not yopu want to pursue it further....you give it your best shot to like doing it.... something like that.

the video was entertaining and gives one pause to think....

PS: are you getting clobbered by that snow storm in Edmonton yet??? Here in Calgary they say we will get hit....but they have been saying that for 3 days now...and we got no snow...in fact most of what we had is melted.

Pretty cloudy but so-far-so-good.

I spent a year in Japan.

There were many occasions where they took on tasks/projects where training would have helped but they just basically rolled up their sleeves and got on with it, trial and error.

So my experience is that they do the opposite a lot of the time.

I'm starting the thread to encourage participation on this subject. Many people say you need "10,000 hours" of hands-on trading experience before you can become adept enough on the subject to be in a position to be any good at it.

Most people who work 40 hour work weeks in a "day job" work approximately 2,000 hours a year. This equates to roughly 5 years of experience to equal the 10,000 hour mark, if you put in 40 hours a week with 2 weeks off per year.

Thoughts?

Mike

Think of it this way. If you are going to be a doctor or a lawyer or an engineer, how many hours would it take to obtain that. Why do people think they can read one book and become a trader? I have been working at it for 40 years and like a professional continue to read and work at the skill. Cheers!
