  • What kind of music/bands do you like to hear while trading, if any?
No music here
  • Do you like, turning the news on, and listen as a background?
Yes, CNBC or Bloomberg. I use it as a background noise.
  • Do you have any feed from a certain trading room, or floor?
No. I tried few of them and realized that it's not for me.
  • Does Granma chatting with your neighbours calm you enough to make your mind at ease while trading?
Nobody comes to my office when the door is closed. Originally I was thinking to put the "ON AIR" sign on my door, lol. My family respects my trading and do not disturb me.
  • Do you enjoy sweet silence to hear your own toughts?
No, I need a background noise of CNBC TV. I am used to it.
  • Do you have a mood-setting ritual prior to start trading, or do you just sit at the pc and work to whatever's on TV?
I put the news channel on. It sets my mood.
  • Have you even ever tought about this? how the athmosphere set could affect your trading performance, and how you could enhance it
Yes, I always wondered what other traders do and how. I tried to trade in the regular trading office with other guys. I realized that I cannot fully concentrate there because the other guys used to come up to chit-chat and to have a look at my screens...which disturbs me. Home office and full concentration on trading only - that works for me well.

1. None, but some times Mozart

2. None.

3. Yes, Rios Quantitative's morning Trade Lab with EP at times (ranked in the top 10 trade rooms out of 400+ by Dr. Dean Handley of Futures Truth Magazine March '14); and there are a couple of other successful traders I IM with for alerts.
Link to article about Rios Quantitative & Futures Truth Mag: https://www.prbuzz.com/business-entrepreneur/218683-rios-quantitative-named-top-10-u-s-trading-room-by-futures-truth-magazine.html

4. With all due respect to Grandma, get away from her or anyone else chatting when you trade.

5. Yes, depends

6. I try and meditate each morning for 20 minutes prior to trading. When you begin your trading process, you're coming out of a coma from the prior trading session, which for most is either the morning or afternoon NY session. You have to first ask yourself these 3 questions: 1) What's really going on; 2) Who's in control; 3) How can I profit?

7. I think about it every week.

What kind of music/bands do you like to hear while trading, if any?

I listen to a Kamelot channel (Kamelot, Nightwish, Epica, Falconer, Dark Moor, Hammerfall.) on Pandora most of the time. Others I will have set to anything hard rock, Metallica, In Flames, etc. Sometimes I prefer softer stuff like Flobots, Cake, Cage the Elephant, etc.

Do you like, turning the news on, and listen as a background?

No news.

Do you have any feed from a certain trading room, or floor?

None.

Does Granma chatting with your neighbours calm you enough to make your mind at ease while trading?

I do not want any talking to me or around me. Cell phone is off and email is closed. I do use the futures.io (formerly BMT) chat often, but as I always say Charts before Chat.

Do you enjoy sweet silence to hear your own toughts?

From time to time. But I prefer to have some music as it allows me to remove myself from the trading. This is really helpful once I have entered a trade.

Do you have a mood-setting ritual prior to start trading, or do you just sit at the pc and work to whatever's on TV?

Yes, I have outlined it in my journal. I have a strict routine that I follow ever day.

Have you even ever thought about this? how the athmosphere set could affect your trading performance, and how you could enhance it

Everyday. I believe in the power of thought and spoken word. So I believe that it is essential to create a winning atmosphere.

What kind of music/bands do you like to hear while trading, if any?
Classical music (favorite: vivaldi - 4 seasons)
or relaxing, not too hectic or disturbing stuff, such as Jack Johnson, Milow or sth like that..
But usually classical, really. I found it helpful to have playlists of ~1 hour or less. gives me a hint when it is time to stretch a bit or get some water etc

Do you like, turning the news on, and listen as a background?
no, never. Just distracting.

Do you have any feed from a certain trading room, or floor?
sometimes I check in for the squawk from tst. but while actively trading its usually muted.
Other than that, no.

Does Granma chatting with your neighbours calm you enough to make your mind at ease while trading?
I hate people around me / talking to me when I try to concentrate. Goes for both studying and trading. When working in the office I tend to either start very early or stay very late as the hours when nobody is around tend to be those where you massively outperform yourself (and others )

Do you enjoy sweet silence to hear your own toughts?
Complete silence is ...unusual where I live - cars, construction sites, neighbors, ...
If it were as silent as in the library, I'd probably prefer complete silence over music. But given the noise outside I stick with my answer to 1)

Do you have a mood-setting ritual prior to start trading, or do you just sit at the pc and work to whatever's on TV? short motivationals from youtube, ensuring water supply at hand & more often than not taking some food to my desk. Although I really should stop eating "on the go" - takes the joy of food..

Have you even ever tought about this? how the athmosphere set could affect your trading performance, and how you could enhance it?
Yeah, every once in a while. Haven't written down my conclusions yet.
Should do that though...

I'm very curious to find out your responses about this, and was quite reluctant as to where to start this thread.

I think it has a lot to do with trading psychology so i guess this is the right place, with the right people to debate what's truly behind your answers.

Please be honest, as i would like to see the environment in which most traders achieve better performance.

So:

1. I like guitar instrumentals... So obviously, I like Joe Satriani and similar artists. I also like acoustic guitar instrumentals. I like any where from Tommy Emmanuel (The Journey--Guitar only version) to Erik Mongrain-- Air Tap. I also enjoy some forms of Classical guitar. I have a Pandora satation for Satch and classical guitar and for other types of acoustic guitar.

2. No, if CNBC is on 99.9% of the time the sound is MUTED!

3. No feed from a trading room, I don't give a hoot what other traders are seeing. Also, I'm usually watching a different market than what the trading room is...

4. Granma is

5. I prefer silence over music. Sometimes I do listen to music tho...

6. no mood setting ritual, just working over the charts and getting a feel for the bias and the levels I want to trade at.

7. Yes, I don't like to listen to music with words because I will start to reminisce and get sidetracked. Only instrumentals so I can concentrate.

I'll listen to music and I either listen to classical (I think it was proven that Mozart actually stimulates brain activity) or 80's rock (cause it gets me all pumped up in a goofy feel good kinda way).
Blz

Yes, classical can stimulate your brain. I love the 80's also but don't listen to that while trading because I will reminisce and get side tracked!

I don't listen to music, but I do listen to a fish tank. I have a sound generator application called Aire Freshener (free) that has all kinds of background sounds like a fish tank, beach, forest, rock concert (BLZ17 might like it) , underwater, waterfall, etc etc. You can chose whatever makes you feel you think you need to feel for whatever you are doing. I got this app to mask my tinnitus actually, fish tank works well for that.

I have tinnitus also I might have to try that to see if it works for me...

I think the reason that I tend to not listen to music while trading is because I am going to want to "rock out and crank things up. I'm a big audiophile and there is no such thing as "half way" on the volume knob, it's all the way up or you aren't trying hard enough.
I can see this being applied to me beating Goldman Sachs in the market tomorrow

Mike

This is why I can NOT live in an APT!!! If Joe or SRV or Bonamassa or Blues Saraceno or Steve Vai etc is laying it down it's GOTTA GET CRANKED UP!

Good luck with the Goldman thing tomorrow

music is very important for me when trading, it actually helps me keep focused and not lose my sanity being alone. When there is complete silence I tend to get a little absorbed in my own thoughts rather than being positively guided by music.

The music has to be the right type and that usually means no vocals. I enjoy pure instrumentals and something that resonates with my mood

Buckethead is a good candidate

the atmospheric guitar lead and riffs are unparalleled

I love Buckethead too. He has some weird stuff but some of it is just Pure Gold!
Still like Satriani better but BH is aright in my book!

    absolutely

    "athmosphere set"???

For some reason the Brazilian Channel on Pandora is my favorite to do trading or related homework or analysis with. Not sure why I always gravitate back towards this channel. Probably because it's relaxing but also up beat and not very distracting.

Try it out, just search Brazilian
