I don't listen to, or watch, anything when trading. I'm a longtime musician, and have a bad tendency to pick up "earworms" (melody stuck in your head) very easily. So if I happen to have a bad trade while listening to a certain song, I tend to associate that song with bad things. Therefore, no music while trading!

I have to listen to music or tv. I do find that tv distracts me. trading can get lonely thats why i need something in the background. i read that music with 50-60 beats per minute is good for concentration., Mozart, vivaldi. you can do a google search for music for concentration or music with 50-60 beats for more information.

Interesting topic, thanks FredyG.

I just got highspeed and am spending some time downloading a music collection. Last century when in my 20's I had zillions of albums, but then moving as I did most of my life, it all fell behind and now I have nothing, basically, and not even a good hi-fi system any more.

I am starting with classical. Tonight downloading all of Beethoven's concertos.
A few nights ago I got all of Genesis' early stuff just for nostalgia's sake, tons of Dylan from a neighbour who has been downloading like crazy too.

But basically I hope to have a decent classical collection within a few weeks and then experiment with a particular composer for a few days to see if it makes a difference. My suspicion is that:

emotional composers/styles will not be helpful therefore I suspect that anyone before Bach won't cut it.

I am curious to see how smooth/cool jazz (like Coltrane or Miles D) might feel.

But I suspect that unless Bach works, possibly Mozart, that silence will be the best. I like silence. Usually have nothing else going on when I trade, not even the browser open.

With silence you hear the weather, too, which is nice. If it's raining you hear rain, or snow, or wind. And then there is the screen with the market ticking away.

Silence is golden.

Cclsys,

Check this, it will bring sound (in headphones) of your computer almost up to hi-end level

JetAudio

there are free version as well as paid, free is not so bad as one can think.

P.s. don;t forget about normal bit rate.

Krgds,
Andrew

Whether it be trading atmosphere or environment, for me it's an end to a means.
By that I mean everything is about getting the mind into a certain state.
Call it the "zone".
Point being, that I prefer things quiet.
ie: no news, no chat, no nothing (I haven't even had a TV for about 9 months now)
until I know I'm in that place, mentally, where I know that I'm understanding what I'm looking at (information).
Then more of the same no news, no chat no nothing to stay in that place.

Personally, music is about the most useful medium to both get me there
and to switch off from trading.(Terry Reid usually does the latter )
My tastes are wide. Anything from Pink Floyd to what they call "rare" Soul.
To help with that "zone" some of the artists off Windam Hill Label, like Will Ackerman.

Each to their own, which is cool..I think they are good and important questions Fredy.

While I tend to try to keep things as quiet as possible while I am trading, I can't deny the impact music has on the psyche. The right song can really motivate you and raise your spirits.

In trading terms, if you are more energetic and/or simply in a happier state because of outside influences (ie: music) then it can benefit your trading. I think the reason that I tend to not listen to music while trading is because I am going to want to "rock out and crank things up. I'm a big audiophile and there is no such thing as "half way" on the volume knob, it's all the way up or you aren't trying hard enough. This definitely wouldn't be good for a trading environment, although if you are more into a nice relaxing jazz or etc then I could see it working.

(listening to Muse's new album The Resistance as I type this) There are some lyrics in their new song " Uprising" that can relate to trading:

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious

I can see this being applied to me beating Goldman Sachs in the market tomorrow

Mike

I'm very curious to find out your responses about this, and was quite reluctant as to where to start this thread.

I think it has a lot to do with trading psychology so i guess this is the right place, with the right people to debate what's truly behind your answers.

Please be honest, as i would like to see the environment in which most traders achieve better performance.

So:
  • What kind of music/bands do you like to hear while trading, if any?
  • Do you like, turning the news on, and listen as a background?
  • Do you have any feed from a certain trading room, or floor?
  • Does Granma chatting with your neighbours calm you enough to make your mind at ease while trading?
  • Do you enjoy sweet silence to hear your own toughts?
  • Do you have a mood-setting ritual prior to start trading, or do you just sit at the pc and work to whatever's on TV?
  • Have you even ever tought about this? how the athmosphere set could affect your trading performance, and how you could enhance it?
Please share your thoughts.
FREDY

Fredy ..

Interesting discussion.
1. 15 minutes of exercise at start of day with nature sounds and the spoken word (comedy etc)
2. No news .. no newspapers .. no TV in my place
3. E-Mini DayTrading Course | Trading Psychology CDs used when appropriate as backround
4. EFT regime at start of day Using EFT to successfully trade the markets (e.g. stock market)
5. own recorded affirmations for trading are under the nature sounds (subliminal)
6. occasionally I will log into a trading room to see the overall market movements
7. I am considering getting a feed of pit noise to accentuate concentration

Thanks!
TJ

I would strongly recommend Jango - Free Music -- Listen to Music Online - Internet Radio where you can create your own station , and listen only to the music you like
Enjoy !
