There is a separate industry of trading platforms that connect to many different brokers and many different data and trading service providers.

For example, you can have a broker account with a particular broker, use NinjaTrader (or Sierra Chart or several others) as your trading platform, have your data supplied by DTN IQFeed (a data provider), and have your trades routed to the exchange by yet another service ). Or, you can have all of these services bundled by one provider.

I find this really confusing and it makes it really hard for me to make the right choices.
Who defines the fees? Which one of these should I look for first? Should I search for a broker and then find the best platform for me or should I do it the other way around?
Is there a list somewhere of recommended brokers? I was really close to using TOS and then I found out they don't have Mini DAX (or DAX at all, as far as I understood).

Do you have any recommendations on how to start? I have been doing demos so far on TS, but I find it to be too expensive compare to other platforms.
Right now, I thought of going on NT, but that is only because I don't know any better.

Thanks

There is a lot of information on Futures.io. Read, read, read. Also, check out this new thread and ask questions there or on other similar threads.

In terms of popularity it's probably Ninjatrader, but it is a retail platform. You can start using the platform for free indefinitely IIRC. It's basically the futures version of metatrader, which is for forex. Just look at all the indicators in the download section that ninja has relative to the others. In terms of customizability and features right out of the box it's probably Sierra though. To get anywhere near the functionality of Sierra ($34 per month subscription though), you'll either need to fork over $1000 for a lifetime license or hundreds to get individual indicators from other venders and still the ninja versions are somewhat inferior. Nonetheless, Ninjatrader has a large community and a very responsive support staff.

FYI for anyone with similar concerns, I believe I answered these questions from @habore in this thread:

@habore, just as an FYI, if you post very similar questions in many similar but different threads, it tends to make it more difficult for members to find subjects that interest them, because the questions and any responses are spread out over several threads. Also, when new threads are created on topics that already exist, it tends to create duplicate or split topics, which also makes it hard for members to use the forum easily.

The moderators, when we encounter those split-off threads, generally close them with a link referring to an existing thread on the topic. If I had seen this entry before I replied to you in your new thread, I would have closed the new thread for that reason, and replied here or some other existing thread.

So, please make use of the Search function and locate threads that are relevant to your concerns, if there are any, before starting a new one.

No harm done, but you can see how it works: if someone had been following this thread and encountered your question here, they would not realize that it already had a very extensive set of responses in your new thread. So help us out by keeping related topics together.

Feel free to continue the discussion in the other thread, now that it's up and running. Just keep this in mind for the future. (And if you think of something new to ask about, please do a Search for any related threads first, and post your question there if there is one. )

I do hope you are finding the information you need to navigate this market of different brokers, software and services.

Bob.

Yeah, I got this after already replying to lots of threads, which were somehow related. I will not do that again
