Should I consider other platforms than Ninjatrader?

Hi all,

I hope it's okay to ask this question here as I find that there's such a wide variety of platforms now that it's hard for me to make an educated choice on my own.

In summary, I have only ever used NT7 and I have mostly been quite happy with it. I do all my backtesting in Excel and custom software, so I used NT7 mostly for charting and order entry (I like executing from the charts, but I suppose I could learn to use the DOM if I had to).

I have now decided to probably upgrade to NT8 as I'm going live in January, but I'm also curious if I should consider completely new alternatives also. It seems like many of the brokers who offer 'free' platforms do not offer NT, but alternatives such as TT, CQG, Investor/RT (this one seems interesting), etc.

In the past, I've heard various people basically say that NT is a horrible platform, unstable, etc., but in my experience using it both in simulator mode and live trading through Interactive Brokers, I've never had any problems to speak of.

I'm leaning toward just sticking with NT since I'm so familiar with it and fairly happy, but thought I could ask just to hear what people think.

Thanks in advance!

I guess you are asking before buying the Ninja licence. Personally, if you are happy with the platform and tools you are using then I would stick with them.
A lot of brokers used to offer Ninja but since they started their own brokerage I understand they have been less keen on other brokers offering the platform too. But the Ninja brokerage round turn costs are very competitive anyway.

Hi,

Actually, no, that's not the issue. In fact, I don't mind the license fee for NT as I think it's reasonably priced. I've just heard some very negative comments about NT in the past, so I guess I'm just interested in hearing if any of that resurfaces in this thread.

Those comments might have been unfounded in the first place and might have been true 10 years ago, not now?

So, unless anyone tells me I'm crazy to choose NT over TT or CQG, I will probably go with NT 8 and stick with what I know.

NinjaTrader offers a C# based open development framework that allows traders to build rich and integrated trading apps limited only by one's imagination. The downside to this approach is that anyone can easily write a bad script that can have adverse impact on the NinjaTrader run time. This is well known. The vast majority of performance issues are related to bad indicators and scripts.

No one has mentioned Sierra Chart. It is fast, has a small footprint and is highly customizable. You can develop powerful studies and systems with spreadsheets or C++ code. Low monthly fee or free at some brokers.

I think what's important is your comfort level with a platform and that you know how to use it. Also you want something that doesn't get in your way or your approach.

You may of already answered your own question.

I've been recommended this multiple times. It does seem like a great platform indeed.

Yes, I believe you're right. I'd like to avoid learning a new platform right now. But, if anyone told me I'd be crazy to use NT compared to *other platform here*, I'd certainly listen.

Anyone using Trading Technologies?

"Learn why the world’s leading banks, proprietary traders, hedge funds, brokers, commercial hedgers and other professional futures traders choose the TT platform from Trading Technologies. Here’s a start: A high-performance, global, redundant network with colocated execution makes TT the fastest commercially available professional futures trading software platform."

(copy and paste from one of their ads)

I've always heard good stuff about this platform and I have had the impression that it's commercially used by professionals as mentioned above.
