Welcome to futures io.

Welcome, Guest!

This forum was established to help traders (especially futures traders) by openly sharing indicators, strategies, methods, trading journals and discussing the psychology of trading.

We are fundamentally different than most other trading forums:
  • We work extremely hard to keep things positive on our forums.
  • We do not tolerate rude behavior, trolling, or vendor advertising in posts.
  • We firmly believe in openness and encourage sharing. The holy grail is within you, it is not something tangible you can download.
  • We expect our members to participate and become a part of the community. Help yourself by helping others.

Sierra Chart vs MultiChart q's for Mike

In a previous thread, Mike graciously offered to answer specific questions on SC vs MC. I don't believe he received any there, but I have a few here:

- Coming from TradeStation and having written simple indicators in EasyLanguage for years: Is there a big difference between the learning curve for SC's C++ language and MC.NET's C# language? (I know regular MC is EL-compatible, but I am considering MC.NET because I am interested in Jigsaw.)

- I have done a lot of exporting to Excel in TS, and a little bit of live linking. Is the built-in spreadsheet in SC a game-changer relative to what you would need to do in MC? Or is it just a nice-to-have? I am pretty proficient at Excel.

- Customer support better at MC or SC? Or about the same?

- I am familiar with the volume profiling capabilities of Investor RT/Market Delta. It seems the general opinion is that SC is better at VP than MC... but is it better enough to be in the same league as IRT/MD, or would a serious VP-er still want to subscribe to IRT/MD?

- Many people compliment SC on being "light" in terms of soaking up computing resources. Is it possible to comment on how much you need to be running for that benefit to be apparent?

Any comments are greatly appreciated.

(I had to look up how to 'mention' someone with a space in their name :-))

I can't help (new to trading, never used MC and barely SC), but thought this might help you out - @Big Mike

Hi Laconic,

just to mention it at the beginning: I am totally biased towards Sierra Chart - so take my thoughts with some caution... :-)

Customer Service: I don't know MC's customer service, but I know some other platforms customer service - and I know Sierra Charts customer service pretty well.
There is no customer service faster than Sierra Charts service. Be it at night, be it on weekends - mostly you get response same day - sometimes same hour.
Manners? Well, sometimes so short in words that it might appear rude. However, getting accustomed to their way I start to love it - since I know what I get: no nice words, but solutions...

Volume profile
: Some years ago I studied very intensely the market profile (Cisco/Jones/Dalton, Jim Pendlebury, Tom Alexander and IOAMT) starting out with MarketDelta and all the MP nerds used MD. However I returned to SC and was greatly satisfied - always getting the same results as my co-students.
Probably the recent versions of Sierra Chart are even way better with TPO than some years ago.

Computing ressources: I am running SC on several computers, even an 8 year old Vista machine and it is running at the same speed and especially REALIBILITY on all OS's.
Some minutes ago I closed down Sierra Chart on my trading system and took the opportunity to do 2 screenshots of the performance monitor: one Sierra Chart running, one screenshot 15 seconds after exiting Sierra Chart:

SC running:

SC exited:

On all my machines over time I found Sierra Chart using something between 3% and 5% of CPU and only very small use of RAM. Check it out with your platforms in comparison with Sierra Chart...

Maybe you might also look into a thread I started on futures.io with some thoughts on SC: here >

Hope you will get some more feedback from other members and hope you find the best platform for your needs,

Best, Chris
