Which platform is a better LONG-TERM choice: Ninja Trader or MultiCharts ?

My 2 cents. I own both MC.net and NT. Haven't tried Xtrader or Qtrader. Used TradeStation and WealthLab for many years and recently have been using TOS a bit. Have also tried RightEdge and have written my own custom solution in C#.

They all have their positive and negatives and it really depends on what kind of trading or research you do. For me, the issue isn't what you can do in these platforms, but rather what you can't do. That's what lead me to build my own solution, but I wouldn't recommend that for 99% of the people. Ridiculously time consuming. I'm hoping NT8 is open enough so that I can incorporate my custom functionality into it but not have to deal with the nitty gritty stuff that comes with a custom application.

Do you mind my asking what type of trading you do?

I use ninjatrader over multicharts solely for reason it has the jigsaw DOM add-on. If you dont use tape either is fine and wont make a big difference in your trading.

Understanding yourself is just as important as understanding markets.

Hi Grumpy,

I day-trade the ES.

Thank you for your comments.

Both of them not good for evaluation calculation because can not use indicator as data for other indicator.
Only InvestorRT and Neoticker can do it.
Which platform else can use indicator as data for other indicator please?
Thank You

Can't vouch for MultiCharts but using indicator's dataseries as input for other indicators is nothing out of ordinary in NinjaTrader. I would be surpised if MC can't do it.

I mean custom made indicators of different tickers as data for other indicators, sorry.
Not C+++++ etc,
Example, I call it Real Volume: SUMmation for last N seconds(LastTradeSize+BidSize+AskSize) for many tickers in row IBM, C, BA, ....

As Final destination I understand My screenshots similar to: https://charthub.com/charts/2015/04/24/tick_precise_technology_april_24
Entry point easy visible around 10.10, where green indicator confirm yellow.

Hi gillesc,

If you are only primarily trading a few instruments (such as the ES) either platform is fine. MC.net and NT are almost identical in the way you create indicators / strategies. I do think that NT is more extendable and NT8 takes that to the next level. Service is about the same for both with quality of response going to MC, but timeliness to NT (most of the MC engineers I believe are in Russia).

Feature-wise, the main thing that distinguishes MC.net in my opinion is the volume profiling / Market Profile features (one of the best I've seen). I know NT has all the Gomi stuff but I prefer having something like that supported by the platform instead of 3rd parties (or in this case a lone developer). The main knock on MC from my perspective is the data management. It is incredibly flexible but a bit of a pain in the ass to use and set up. I also found the data side to be a bit slow especially if you are using a lot of symbols. They also have no concept of symbol lists, which for me, makes stock trading difficult.

Lastly, NT definitely has a larger user base. If you compare the number of forum messages between the two, NT has about 10x the activity and that's not including this forum.

What I am hoping to do personally is to migrate all my trading to NT8 over the next 12 months, by integrating my custom trading application into NT8 (as long as NT8 isn't a dud).

Hope that helps.

Curious, what is the thought process behind adding the BidSize + AskSize into the equation? And are the tickers you include from a principal components analysis or what you perceive to be market leaders?

It is just example, many other variation in use. Subject is - Which software can do it without deep C+#++ recoding?
