NinjaTrader has arguably the best simulator engine and reporting tool for the average retail trader, and you can get it for free from their website for simulated trading.
I agree with Mike. Bare in mind, if you on demo license, you will only get 30 days. If your using a paid license, you can sim all you want. I don't think anything will come close to Ninja Trader.
i use the ninja trader simulator, whi i think is very good.i can practice the entries, over and over, to get the timing down.On market replay, i dial in specific entries, and just practicee them every evening, to get up to speed.i trade the cl, which is fast, so ,in order to be fast, we practice!!hope this helps
I have tried to use historical data downloaded from elsewhere and it screws up to no end. Does anyone have any experience with using historical data (not Market replay) with NT8
Historical data is not granular enough to be very accurate. You will want to go with Market Replay data. I realize that NT offers market replay through a paid service and you may have trepidation about signing up to get all of the bells and whistles that come with this.... https://www.theintentionaltrader.com/mrdd-eas/ But you can get market replay data yourself (Just not access to download years at a time with one click) You have to do a little work, but it is still very easy.
Connection > Kinetic / End of day free
Tools > Historical Data > Market Replay > Load > Get Market Replay Data> Select Instrument / Select Date (Download)
The reason that market replay data is the only way to go in my opinion, is that it contains historical bid / ask pricing, level 2 volume and this lets you take advantage of NT simulation engine the way it was designed, which is to fill you more accurately based on the level 1 and 2 volumes. Using only historical data, you only get the HLOC and then NT has to make assumptions about when and where to fill you. Just about anyone can trick historical data using limit orders, or exotic bar types and produce backtests with 7 figure returns that are outside of reality.

I agree. It depends a little on what you are actually backtesting, small time frames, exotic bars etc. For $49 its easier than trying to put something together and hope the data is accurate.
Some alternatives that are "operating system agnostic" (can run on Windows, MacOS and Linux):
- Interactive Brokers TWS: has a "paper trading" option, where you can simtrade with the same market data available for TWS (paid and realtime, or free but delayed). Depends on Oracle Java, and has options for downloading and installing on all platforms.
- Trading 212: web-browser based, seems to have realtime data for free on the demo account (can anyone confirm on this?) and in a few steps you are registered and using it. Well designed, cute to the eyes. Cons: market data is BATS only, reflects some but not all movements.
