Are margins for shorting options available anywhere on the web? Right now I have to ask someone to rundown the price of an individual option when a customer asks. I would be great if there were page that a list of all margins for all strikes (puts and calls)
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
It's been a while since I have placed a short option order myself through a trading platform but the one I used was never right for some reason. I don't know if my clearing house padded the requirement or if the trading platform didn't report it correctly. Either way I would like to find a source to look these up myself on the web.
S5 Trading's platform has options margin requirements. You can get a free demo of their platform for a 2 week period. However, they charge much more margin for short options than what their platform says. I opened an account with them with $4K and was limited to one short option regardless of its margin requirement.
On IB - TWS, after you select your strike in the Option Chain you go to the Order Entry window, press Advanced and "Margin/Performance".
This way I found out that buying options required much less margin than selling options.
