BM,

My daughter and her husband are self employed and as such do not have health insurance either. They just recently had a baby and found that hospitals and doctors were very willing to work with them on the price they charged especially if you pay upfront. In fact they found out that health care providers will charge a higher rate when they know insurance is involved and when you don't pay up front. So, if you can pay up front as much as possible you might be able to get a better rate. My daughter was actually billed $15,000 by the hospital but because she paid $3500 up front, the rest was discounted. So, they only paid $3500 to the hospital for delivery. Another example for my daughter was a test that she needed normally costs $1200 and she got it for $300. Just thought I'd mention that in case you can leverage that knowledge for use in your case.

Well.

Cost is even more than thought, double, so many more thousands.

And will require two surgeries, and expected use will be 50% after 1 year, but there is a problem with infection and some other stuff all of which is bad news but I don't even want to think about it right now.

Very unhappy.

Mike

We have found this to be the case as well....often the discount is very deep....you just have to ask and tell them no insurance but you can pay cash of "X" amount.

Good luck with this over the next few days and weeks.

Mike, my prayers for a successful operation tomorrow.

I know this easier said than done, but please try not to worry. The bills, etc will eventually take care of itself, and you will, over time be back to normal.

Right now, SEE your hand normal and functioning as before...allways visualize that.

They have to put pins into my finger/bones to piece back the broken pieces and then will set it to correct the dislocation while the pins will hold the broken pieces together. Two surgeries -- one to put them in, and another to remove the pins and screws from my hand about 4-6 weeks later.

The $8,000 bill doesn't include casts, physical therapy, or prescriptions, etc. It's just the doctor, the medical surgery center, and the anesthesiologist. Yes I have asked for all discounts possible, cash pay, up front, etc. This figure already represents discounts.

Also, there is still concern of ligament/tendon damage, but we don't know yet.

The surgery is currently scheduled for Friday.

It is hard for me to do much typing now as pretty much one handed, so my participation in coming weeks on forum will be less than usual. For those wanting to help me -- the way to do this is by helping others on the forum as much as possible in my absence/on my behalf.

I have cancelled the movers because I can't finish some of the labor I needed to get done this week in order to move this weekend which was the original plan. So the new plan is to delay moving about 2 weeks to account for all the downtime from this event.

That's pretty much all I know.

Thanks to everyone who sent me a message and for your well wishes.

Mike

Hang on, Mike. It will be fine again..always could happen worse things. But I understand how it is difficult, huge pain, lot of money for hoping to be health again and the four-leg friend with agressive tendencies. It needs a time and everything will be solved step by step. Dont give away your dog, it might happen again with other dog. I have had a dog for more than 10 years, we are best friends and sometimes he switch to really strange play-fight mood and he can be very agressive, but he is doing it only with me. I have to show him, that I am his master and sometimes it is painful for both of us, but then he is fine. Till the dog is not bad on other people it should be "ok" , but there are always some limits and the trust is also desirable..

I wish you fast recovery and smooth way to make friends with your dog.

R.

Try Dragon Naturally Speaking. I think ZTR used it when his hands were not working right. If I remember, he said it worked pretty well.

Hi Mike,

only reading this today. This is really bad news. It affects health, wealth and the relationship with your dogs at the same time, so it is a natural reaction that you feel annoyed and somewhat depressed.

At the same time you are lucky that it is only the little finger of your left hand. It could have been much worse, although it seems to be a complicated fracture.

You should take some days off to recover. The forum will survive without you for a few days, although we can't ban ourselves, if we engage in word fighting.

Just want to wish you a quick and complete recovery from your misfortune.

Dont let the money stress you out buddy . Since you have a major dilemma and cant change it dont stress out and make it worse . When they built the railways and had a mountain in the way they drilled through it so thats what you should do . The bill can be financed and negotiated and paid on time . A good friend woke up with a heart attack and no insurance and got split open hours later for a quad bypass and hes paying it off , glad to be alive .
