When I was younger I was addicted to what I think were the introduction to reality TV to the states, namely 'Real World', and 'Road Rules' on MTV. What was different about these shows is that they put a group of people together with very different personalities and backgrounds, to accomplish a common task. The emphasis was on team work, and finding a way to work together despite all of their differences. Some of the personalities were chosen to bring to light certain social issues, like a character with Aids, or the fundamental christian, or the redneck, or the virgin, or the morman, or the racist, the nymphomaniac, the alcoholic, etc. Everyone succeeded together as a group, or failed together as a group.
The draw of the show came from the frictions, attractions, and interactions between the disparate characters in accomplishing the common goal. Oh, and of course, all of the characters being young, single and attractive, always provided the ubiquitous romance/sexual aspects. At the end of each season, every character left learning something about another person that they would never otherwise have any interaction with in real life, and in the process they learned something about themselves, learned how to get along and cooperate with different people, and many times broke down some stereotypes based on ignorance, etc.
Since then reality TV has taken a different turn. All the current shows are based on individual achievement. The focus is on 'eliminating' the people you live with and work with in order to get ahead. That is the draw that the producers are relying on to keep the interest of the viewers. The result is that, unlike the previous shows that I mentioned these shows foster lying, cheating, plotting, caniving, back stabbing from every single character. Some of these shows have been on the air for over 10 years. Imagine you have a 14 year old who has been watching these shows for the past 10 years. What do you think they've been learning? How do you think their views of the world, and society is going to be influenced by that? What character traits do you think they will develop with that influence? I think these shows are a travesty, and highlight the absolute worst in human behavior, and present it as 'real life'. I think they slowly desensitize people, romanticize, and promote the worst in human behavior. They have the potential of influencing an entire generation with some very negative social norms.
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
the "real world" wasnt any better.. MTV still have it, it is still crap.. but yes, as you stated, at the beginning it might have been somewhat better... in the end, all reality is garbage for the most part... dont take me wrong, there are some shows on the nature channel about survivalism.. i find those of use.. I dont consider them reality show in the sense of the word as mass media classifies reality.
as to your comment about what TV does to minds.. nothing new bud... how else would a mother be able to kill her own newborn offspring?, or a 8 year old be able to kill and rape a younger child? yet, main stream media dont really care and most people dont really care.. I dont allow my children to watch TV, I spend $$$ and get them old programs from PBS and things like that, and they only watch movies if I am with them and I know what movie they are watching because I have previewed it before and know what the content is...
there was another empire long ago that was similar in nature, with their gladiators and excess behaviors.. that empire is long gone...
welcome to the beginning of the fall of the US empire, just like the roman empire... once the humanity is lost within its society, is rather easy for the remainder of the structure within a government to fall down, and that society to dissaper... specially when that society believes themselves the "model" that everyone else should follow and they act as the police of the world..
As far as comedy goes, I'm waiting for 'The League' to come back on. I find that I don't always LOL at a lot of comedies I enjoy, but I still find them funny. I find that 'the League' literally has me laughing-out-loud while watching it.
I've been also watching a web series called the LXD on hulu.com. It's a really interesting series designed to feature exceptional dancers, but for the musicians on this thread, the choice and quality of the music is absolutely phenomenal. Definitely need to have an amplified PC sound system, or connect the PC to your home stereo system.
I've done some practice with some of the performers on that series. The "episode" in the Old West where there are fire spinners, I've spun with those guys and gals, and they invited me to perform on a Fire All Star's DVD last summer. They are a group out of LA called Fire Groove.
