No reality TV for me. Well, maybe closest thing is "Real Time with Bill Maher", lol.

I have an 8TB media server. No cable or satellite. For years now...

Yes, Colbert is also quite good.

When I lived "down under", I used to watch something called "Newstopia". It is the best news satire show I've ever seen, very intelligent. The rapidity of which the jokes are delivered, made it almost hard for a non-native English speaker to keep up, though.

It almost made it hard to watch The Daily Show. For although Stewart makes some really good points, the show is also filled with rather soft ones....

I wouldn't put the John Stewart show on the same category as reality tv... That would be insulting the show is 1000 times better than a bunch of morons asking for attention.

Downunder free2air TV is stuck with too much sports. "Reality" shows like Masterchef, which has just concluded its 3rd season with 6 episodes a week over 3 months is surprisingly entertaining and do have some value apart from filling in time.

True. I do watch European films on occasion as well as some BBC productions on ABC. They are a nice change if they are not based on the typical "Hollywood" recipe, no offense intended towards anyone.

When I was younger I was addicted to what I think were the introduction to reality TV to the states, namely 'Real World', and 'Road Rules' on MTV. What was different about these shows is that they put a group of people together with very different personalities and backgrounds, to accomplish a common task. The emphasis was on team work, and finding a way to work together despite all of their differences. Some of the personalities were chosen to bring to light certain social issues, like a character with Aids, or the fundamental christian, or the redneck, or the virgin, or the morman, or the racist, the nymphomaniac, the alcoholic, etc. Everyone succeeded together as a group, or failed together as a group.

The draw of the show came from the frictions, attractions, and interactions between the disparate characters in accomplishing the common goal. Oh, and of course, all of the characters being young, single and attractive, always provided the ubiquitous romance/sexual aspects. At the end of each season, every character left learning something about another person that they would never otherwise have any interaction with in real life, and in the process they learned something about themselves, learned how to get along and cooperate with different people, and many times broke down some stereotypes based on ignorance, etc.

Since then reality TV has taken a different turn. All the current shows are based on individual achievement. The focus is on 'eliminating' the people you live with and work with in order to get ahead. That is the draw that the producers are relying on to keep the interest of the viewers. The result is that, unlike the previous shows that I mentioned these shows foster lying, cheating, plotting, caniving, back stabbing from every single character. Some of these shows have been on the air for over 10 years. Imagine you have a 14 year old who has been watching these shows for the past 10 years. What do you think they've been learning? How do you think their views of the world, and society is going to be influenced by that? What character traits do you think they will develop with that influence? I think these shows are a travesty, and highlight the absolute worst in human behavior, and present it as 'real life'. I think they slowly desensitize people, romanticize, and promote the worst in human behavior. They have the potential of influencing an entire generation with some very negative social norms.

the "real world" wasnt any better.. MTV still have it, it is still crap.. but yes, as you stated, at the beginning it might have been somewhat better... in the end, all reality is garbage for the most part... dont take me wrong, there are some shows on the nature channel about survivalism.. i find those of use.. I dont consider them reality show in the sense of the word as mass media classifies reality.

as to your comment about what TV does to minds.. nothing new bud... how else would a mother be able to kill her own newborn offspring?, or a 8 year old be able to kill and rape a younger child? yet, main stream media dont really care and most people dont really care.. I dont allow my children to watch TV, I spend $$$ and get them old programs from PBS and things like that, and they only watch movies if I am with them and I know what movie they are watching because I have previewed it before and know what the content is...

there was another empire long ago that was similar in nature, with their gladiators and excess behaviors.. that empire is long gone...

welcome to the beginning of the fall of the US empire, just like the roman empire... once the humanity is lost within its society, is rather easy for the remainder of the structure within a government to fall down, and that society to dissaper... specially when that society believes themselves the "model" that everyone else should follow and they act as the police of the world..

PBS has good programs, it also offered the only news broadcast I found tolerable...

Hard to beat Sagan's "Cosmos: A Personal Voyage"!

Louis C.K's show is pretty funny too.

As far as comedy goes, I'm waiting for 'The League' to come back on. I find that I don't always LOL at a lot of comedies I enjoy, but I still find them funny. I find that 'the League' literally has me laughing-out-loud while watching it.

I've been also watching a web series called the LXD on hulu.com. It's a really interesting series designed to feature exceptional dancers, but for the musicians on this thread, the choice and quality of the music is absolutely phenomenal. Definitely need to have an amplified PC sound system, or connect the PC to your home stereo system.

I've done some practice with some of the performers on that series. The "episode" in the Old West where there are fire spinners, I've spun with those guys and gals, and they invited me to perform on a Fire All Star's DVD last summer. They are a group out of LA called Fire Groove.

Many thanks to the site and all the contributors. Great source of info.

I tried getting into Torchwood. I decided to start with Season 3 earlier. I've only watched 2 episodes, but so far I'm just not making a connection.

I actually watched the next episode of S03. And the show just got interesting. Particularly how the politicians are dealing with the transfer of the kids and exempting themselves.

I'm getting a real kick out of it.

I've continued to reminisce and I would like to add "I'm Alan Partridge" to the list...

Only two seasons were made, each with 6 episodes. If you like "Fawlty Towers" and "The Office" (not the dreadful american version), you will probably enjoy the antics of Alan Partridge, as well...

Earlier in the episode Alan tries to steal a traffic cone, but is caught in the act by the police...

Great series. Funny and well written. Although I think the characters of the gay couple are somewhat weak because they are such caricatures.

Hey Mike
About The Pacific. You cannot compare the two series at all. Different premise and ideas in the Pacific. I would agree it is not as exciting, not filmed as well, and overall lacking in a few areas. The Pacific is more about the psychological tests of the soldiers during the war. Although a little predictable, the series overall was 7/10. Band of Brothers on the otherhand 10/10.

Thanks for reminding me. I remember it premiered when I was living "down under", but I only caught the one episode before continuing my travels.

I've been through Knowing me, knowing you with Alan Partridge (A-ha!) and both seasons of I'm Alan Partridge. Brilliant stuff! Apparently he has made a webseries for Foster's recently, but I haven't seen it yet. Hopefully Alan gets the movie he deserves...

I think Brittish humor is different then American humor. There have been several popular British comedies that have been remade in the US verbatim with the exact British script with American actors, and they have all done poorly in the States. One of these that come to mind was a sitcom named 'Couples'. It got canceled only after a few episodes. The sitcom 'The Office' came from the UK, and has been really popular in the states, but they only used the show's concept, not verbatim scripts from the original. With this approach, I think the strength of that show is based directly on the main actor's (Steve Carell) comedic style. I don't think Ricky Jervais, the main actor in the British series would have been able to carry the show here.

Back in the 80's or was it the 90's?? Age is setting in..LOL
I loved a Vimpire movie set in a modern period, it was called "The night stalker"; I real heart thumper!
I believe it was with Darran Mcgavin, who later repraised the role in a series called "kochek"

The series was So-So, but the movie the whole thing was based on was really scary because of how real it appeared to pourtry an actual vampire in a modern city.

Andy Whitfield, star of Spartacus, died yesterday at his home in Australia. This was a great series to watch. I hope the replacement for the lead does as good a job.

Many thanks to the site and all the contributors. Great source of info.

Damn, that sucks. He did a great job with it. I remember when I was looking for the new season to start, they delayed it and produced that other version cause Andy had cancer.

It was a fun series to watch nonetheless.

Would it make me seem like a dork if I admit to liking ' Vampire Diaries' and I'm excited it's coming back on this week?

I saw that. I have the series but haven't watched it yet. Heard it was good. There are two different Spartacus series that I have, and I get confused which is which... "Spartacus Blood and Sand" and "Spartacus Gods of the Arena".

I have the series but haven't watched it. On a related Vampire note, I have watched seasons 1-3 of True Blood and am waiting for season 4 to end before starting it.

I love it when Bill says "Soookie!" (come on, you know you just said it in his accent!)

I just watched the season finale of True Blood. I would say that this season was MUCH better than the last.

I dunno if you meant movies or sci-fi shows?

But one movie I enjoyed was whatever the name of the movie related to 'FireFly' was. The series 'Fire-fly' as well.

For me the first two 'Terminator' movies are classics but they do include pieces of the futuristic apocalyptic war.

I think the series 'Fringe' that comes on is really well done as well. Although I felt it kinda started to loose a bit of momentum, but I'm hoping that picks back up.

They are the same series. Blood and Sand is the story of Spartacus. God's of the Arena is a prequel that breaks down the interactions between Roman ruling elite and the Gladiator houses vying for position in the Games. Watch God's of the Arena first and you'll get a much better understanding as to how who fits in with whom.

What about that very last shot in 'God's of the Arena' where they show the scene that you know...... kinda shows you-know-what?

Trading With The Stars.

The plural of God is Gods, not God's.
  • Gods of the Arena.
  • God's retribution upon those who use the apostrophe incorrectly.

And remember, what traders do is called losing. Loosing must be the opposite of tighting, whatever that is.

The new 'Two and a Half Men' with Ashton Kutcher should be interesting. I think this is a very well written show. I hope Ashton Kutcher can fill Charlie Sheen's shoes.

I hate that I just never saw the humor in 'Two and a Half Men?'

I argue with my friend on that about '30 Rock.' I just don't get the humor in that show either.

I recently started watching Breaking Bad.

Wow, I like it

Without spoiling anything (everything I'll write below happens in episode #1): It's about a middle aged man (I think he turns 50?), he has a physically disabled son and his wife is pregnant. He is a high school chemistry teacher.

He finds out he has stage 3 lung cancer.

He decides to start cooking meth and selling it to pay for his cancer bills, and to leave his family some money when he is dead and buried. But he doesn't tell them....

Very interesting show.

A week or two ago I watched the series finale of Entourage. I don't think I posted about it... anyway, what a huge freaking disappointment. I'll try not to spoil anything in case you haven't seen it, but the episode was a disaster, the entire season in fact was a major let down.

The only saving grace was the very, very end of the last episode --- after the credits --- that involved Ari and his wife. I loved that scene. And many have speculated it left it wide open for a movie to continue the franchise. I'm willing to bet the majority of people didn't even see the scene, since it was after the end credits finished rolling.

First of all, there is no need to redo them.

I think the US version of The Office is an abomination. It can be funny, but not in the same way as the original. Americans don't seem to appreciate the subtlety that is the comedic genius of a show like that.

The US has the best (and often also the worst) of "everything", except for humor. The British and Australians are unbeatable...

That being said, I quite enjoy the "crude" American humor, as well. National Lampoon has made me laugh numerous times... Lethal Weapon, e.g. haha!

'The Office,' the US version is HILARIOUS! Not all the time, but 90% of the time it is HIL-Arious!

First my taste in music and now this?

Do you want to take this outside, chump?

By the way, I did not say it was not funny, just not in the same way as the original. Some of the same scenes were replicated in the US version, but they are so overplayed that it ruined it for me. That being said, I still find it funny. But as a comedy show, not as a "mockumentary"(which it was intended).

And I want to add that a lot of the US animation series are pure comedic gold!

Has the wire been mentioned? (sorry did not want to go through 19 pages)

Great show.

UK office was great, so was Extras. Have not seen the US version so I can't really comment on which I like better.

@Twiddle

Looks like 3 other people agree with you. And I will throw in my vote as well to make it 4. I think it was one of the best dramas EVAR produced for television!

Rome was also really good. I stopped watching game of thrones after the 3rd one b/c it was brutally cruel w/o the redeeming qualities of a Rome , The Wire and Deadwood. ......

It all comes down to personal taste. I think Steve Carell has one the best satirical comedic timing and delivery I've ever seen, and I think Ricky Jervais is just plain silly. I'm sure you probably think the opposite, and I'm sure plenty of other people fall in both camps...different personal tastes.

Disney isn't what it used to be...

The episode was:

Who did it to Trina? from the series Victorious.

I thought it was funny actually. Maybe I chose the wrong clip.

Psych has me laughing out loud. Sometimes in embarrassment though.

re: Big Mike's post about children's TV.

It seems like the innocence is lost in favor of commercialism driven subject not overseen by today's too busy surviving to care, corrupting culture. Compare to watching kids shows in the 70's and 80's. You don't see shows anymore like "Battleship Yamato", "Battle for the Planets" and "Ark II". Even the original Transformers has been bastardized to an Foxx eye-candy Bayformers trash.

It just drives me nuts when I keep hearing "save the children" by teacher unions and the useless Dept. of Education while more taxpayer dollars are wasted. True, the U.S. still has the best education in the world, but that's only in the graduate schools of universities which are mostly attended by foreign nationals now anyways. While undergraduate GEd and grade k-12 are more than half filled with crap totally useless to students but instead funding the "save the children" "education" machine.

I don't really watch TV anymore. Mostly listen to political/financial talk radio/video. I'll catch up on Star Wars Clone Wars downloads sometimes which seemed more like an old fashioned cartoon,... until Lucas started having wide eyed in pain, characters gratuitously lightsaber impaled from behind like sticking his middle finger to us Gen X'rs, "haha, caught you GenX'rs still watching!".

Definitely not a kid-friendly cartoon.

I think Archer is hilarious. You should watch one episode, to see if its your type of humor.

So I have watched Season 1 of Archer now, will start Season 2 soon. It is pretty damn funny

Yeah, Homeland is looking like it will be a good series.

Similar was a series ' Rubicon' that came on AMC that was really good. It only ran for 1 season, but I hope it comes back one day.

Love to watch when I need a pick-me-up. It's so far remote from real life that it can't be real.

It's the funniest show on Aussie TV.

OK, I'm only half serious, but........................ really !!!!

Explanation: Right wing politics in Aussie is traditionally more aligned to Democrat politics in the US - the major conservative party here goes by the name of the Liberal Party - there's a wealth of bar tales there as you may imagine. But like the rest of the uncompromising planet that we all live on this is changing by the month - eg the climate changes one way and politics goes in the other way and science and reality become conspiracies. Oh the humanity!

BTW did you know that the Aussie Labor government this week passed its carbon tax/trading legislation against fierce resistance by the Liberal party that only a year ago were staunch supporters of carbon tax/trading legislation? Did you also know that the current Labor government is a minority government that only maintains power through support of independents and minor parties?

Dare I suggest that politicians can be disingenuous? Nah, that never happens

Oh you have to love politics - it's the best entertainment on TV

ps I'm politically neutral - I will vote for the party that offers the best policies for my company and me personally. Darn it, yes, OK I admit it I'm a cynical voter and out for what I can get for the entity that feeds me and my family. Most people aren't like me at all are they?

Cheers, and please be nice to me,

Nano

Maybe "What TV series do you watch?" can be expanded to:
"What do you watch?" There is so much on DVD. TV series,
movies, documentaries, how-to fix up the house shows, etc. etc.

Also, one could ask it as:
"What do you want to watch?"

A funny movie that isn't a romantic comedy?
A action movie that isn't sci-fi?

What about a hit TV show set in Alaska with quirky characters?

If Northern Exposure is on TV in reruns, I must have missed it.
It is on DVD however. This is not a recommendation, just an
example. Some of the futures.io (formerly BMT) members have seen stuff others
have not. It is just a different way to posting to this thread.
(If someone has suggested this idea already I'm sorry to have
repeated it here.)

I like watching such stuff myself. Recently ( and not for the first time ) there
has been a challenge to the speed limit of the universe. The speed of light.

Read only if you have the time:

CERN clocks subatomic particles traveling faster than light - CBS News

Faster Than The Speed Of Light? - CBS News

Also the universe is expanding...at an increasing rate. This was not expected
to be the case a while back, to my knowledge. Basically this means
that physicists don't understand gravity. If the universe is expanding, it should
be doing so at an ever decreasing rate.

Dark energy. Dark matter. They have no real idea about these either.
