He's leaving because of one thing.....really bad ratings on a cable channel with really bad ratings. Ratings drive advertisers. No ratings, no advertisers = no show. Simple really. He even placed below Racheal Maddow and that is hard to do. The rest is just a cover story to keep his public image intact....

I stopped watching him a long time ago (I actually don't get cable TV or satellite TV anymore, for a while now...). Sometimes I liked what his show was about, but most of the time I found it petty feuds and arguments instead of hard news.
That said, I am not sure it was because of low ratings:
Just browsing that site and a few others on the web, MSNBC ratings seem to be rising in general, outpacing CNN. I looked at several days and found Olbermann was #2 in his time slot behind Fox.
Some say he was fired for publicly voicing his disagreement about Comcast buying GE/NBC Universal.
