best way to lose or control weigth and mental health is cycling for me
I try to go for 1,5 hour or 2 hours every day
Roberto

To lose mental health?

Usually I am happy with a 1 hour drive, but only if it's not raining. If the weather is bad, I have a training device at home, which I do not like to use...

Good work, Mike. Consistency is key, especially with the diet. It takes time for your body to be become more efficient at burning fat, so progress will be slow in the beginning.

I'm into week 6 of my program and have lost 10 pounds - mostly fat as my strength is the same or better. I'm experimenting with a keto type diet and I must say I haven't felt better. Biggest plus from the diet is my mental stamina is significantly higher - no more afternoon trading fatigue!

It has been just about 4 weeks now. I'm still going strong, sticking with it - tracking every meal, watching exactly what I eat and what I buy at the grocery store. Have learned a lot about evil marketing to make it seem like something is healthier when it really isn't.

I've lost a few pounds, would be nice to have lost more, but I know it will come. It took a long time to put the weight on, I know it will take a long time to get it off. I am not starving myself or radically altering routines, so it is very easy to stay on this diet.

Because of my bad back, I'm presently looking into selling my treadmill which is really hard on me, and replacing it with an elliptical trainer. That is my next move.

Mike

Would you mind elaborating a bit on the diet portion of your routine?

I guess it involves medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). {never tried them}
All this gets complicated quickly.

In the 1960s, it was discovered that medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) produce more ketones per unit of energy than normal dietary fats (which are mostly long-chain triglycerides).[16] MCTs are more efficiently absorbed and are rapidly transported to the liver via the hepatic portal system rather than the lymphatic system.[5]

Ketogenic diet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MCT oil is interesting because, when it is metabolised in the body, it behaves rather more like a carbohydrate than a fat. The fuel of preference for the body is carbohydrate, and the body will use up its store of carbohydrate before using other fuels... Unlike other fats, MCT oil does not go into the lymphatic system; instead it is transported directly to the liver where it is metabolised, so releasing energy quickly, just like a carbohydrate, and creating lots of ketones in the process.

MCT oil in the ketogenic diet

Ketones have been described as "magic" in their ability to increase metabolic efficiency, while decreasing production of free radicals, the damaging byproducts of normal metabolism. Ketone bodies are relevant to neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease,[5] and the heart and brain operate 25% more efficiently using ketones as a source of energy.[6] Research has also shown ketones play a role in reducing epileptic seizures with the high-fat, near-zero carbohydrate Ketogenic Diet.

As for an elliptical trainer, I was considering one of these.

Mike

We built a professional quality gym at my former work. I was tasked with the selection and purchase of the all the workout equipment.

Regarding the ellipticals. Try to find several types locally to demo. There's a lot variation on how they feel and the quality of movement. Then research to see is the manufacturer is known for high quality products.

Also; I've spent many hours on the elliptical, depending on how you workout, you'll most likely have to spend many more hours on it as opposed to the treadmill to burn the same amount of calories. BTW, I have a bad back, too, which is why I spent most of the time on the elliptical and Stair Master.

What do you guys think about a recumbent bike as opposed to a elliptical trainer?

Such as:
Amazon.com: Schwinn 240 Recumbent Exercise Bike: Sports & Outdoors

I'm still in the research phase.

I do have a bad back and a bulging disc, plus bad arthritis in my knees... so I'm trying to find something low impact (physical body) but that I will still see results on and therefore be inclined to continue to use it

Like Slack said: Try to find several types locally to demo.

There isn't much perfect in this world. I checked out the reviews at the link you provided Mike.
It isn't easy to assemble, the least of it really. I did see a number of people comment negatively
about the seat. Since you have to sit on this, I wouldn't buy it without a test drive.

I found sharky's askthetrainer link interesting.

This is a link from the link about the 'seat' (perhaps a little overkill on my part):

Seat

The seat is the most obvious difference between recumbent bikes and their upright counterparts. Since many people who are looking at these recumbent bike reviews have back and posture problems, the quality and ergonomic design of the recumbent bike model's seat is going to be a very important factor helping determine the recumbent bike's rating. In addition to the quality of the seat, the usefulness of the available adjustments of the recumbent bike's seat and backrest is also going to be taken into consideration for all recumbent bike reviews.

Recumbent Bike Reviews Cardio Exercise Bikes Benefits of aerobic machines

This is also interesting from askthetrainer:

{ OK, didn't see this was already mentioned }

Arc Trainers

The arc trainer is another non-impact cardio machine...You step on two platforms and basically swing your legs back and forth...Non-impact machines are the best cardio machines for people with chronic joint problems. The arc trainer can get your heart rate up effectively without putting too much stress on your legs.

One last thing about " recumbent bike as opposed to a elliptical trainer". I was reading today
that ellipticals are better to maintain bone density than recumbent bikes. I don't know if I get the
reasoning there. The elliptical provides weight bearing exercise and the recumbent bike doesn't,
is what is said.

For arthritis try Stop Pain Extra Strength spray or Stop Pain Extra Strength roll on. Don't use too much,
but you definitely have to apply it generously. It should work. If it does let us know. It works on the joints of
a relative that has arthritis in the hands.
