Hi guys,

I am a trekkie. I grew up on TNG and became a huge fan, watching all of TNG many times, plus of course DS9, VOY and even ENT. The only thing I don't like is TOS.

Sci-fi junkies like me were recently blessed with the first Trek in over 10 years, Star Trek: Discovery. And then a surprise announcement also came from Seth MacFarlane unveiling his trek-like show, The Orville.

The Orville has aired 3 episodes as of this post, with one more tonight (Thursday's). I've seen them and definitely enjoyed them. Some say it's a better Trek than Trek itself (recent incarnations), but I wish he would dial back some of the humor and take the responsibility of a Roddenberry type Trek more seriously. Overall, I like the show so far.

ST: DSC has aired just one night so far, last Sunday, with a double episode premier. I felt it was pretty good, although heavy on battle and light on what made me love Roddenberry's TNG so much. I hope that with time, it will find its place. Regardless, it's Trek, so I feel almost obligated in a way to watch it.

I hope that both shows don't get cancelled any time soon -- that is my biggest fear, like many sci-fi junkies. I remember years ago in the Stargate era -- I'm a huge fan of SG-1 and Atlantis -- they premiered a new series, Stargate Universe. It lasted only two seasons before being cancelled, a real shame because I think it had a lot of promise and of course I was a real fan of the Stargate er, uhm, universe as it were.

Then of course was Firefly, another slap in the face going back further in history.

What do you guys think?

Mike

I liked it. I like the original ST, STNG, and Voyager. I did not like the others. I feel like they are trying to be more realistic and serious. I'd like to see the science taken slightly more serious. I did not like the jet pack thing because it would take a lot of energy and a shuttle would make more sense. Also, there was no reason for the thrusters to stay on. I'd like to see an alternate reality take on ST where the Federation could be more an ambiguous morally. I'd like to see the Klingons given a more serious treatment, i.e. made to be more likable.

Haven't see Orville.. will check it out

Hehe. You didn't mention all the sounds while in space... But there are always compromises for effect.

I liked the alien in DSC, I think Saru is his name, that can sense death coming. I found his behavior interesting and unpredictable.

Thanks. Yes, I noticed the sound in space too. However, if you were inside the suite, I'm thinking because there is air in the suite then vibrations could be transmitted. The sounds would be probably be a lower bass, muted, etc.

Watching it now... liking it so far. Interesting learning about their technology and comparing it to TNG.

Just watched the first Orville. Unfortunately I thought it was rather corny. Story was rather lame, script was blah, and special effects are what you would expect for a TV show. In fact if it wasn't for the humor I would have thought it would do better at 10am Saturday on Disney rather than Prime Time Network TV. I'll probably watch a 2nd to give it a chance.

Did not like Orville and won't be giving it another chance. But, the Discovery was interesting especially will be interesting to learn about Star Fleet black ops.

Interesting comments guys. I think you should give Orville a chance, the first few episodes of TNG weren't great either.

The third episode of Discovery was more interesting to be sure, so many unanswered questions...

I actually liked Orville and maybe they should pull back on the humor some especially in Ep 3 it was to much .I think Discovery have a potential to be really good even thought i think they put to much clutter in the grafix and that yellow blob creature even thought it has alot of humor is to much fantasy even for me.
