I actually liked Orville and maybe they should pull back on the humor some especially in Ep 3 it was to much .I think Discovery have a potential to be really good even thought i think they put to much clutter in the grafix and that yellow blob creature even thought it has alot of humor is to much fantasy even for me.

I've liked the most recent episode of Discovery more than Orville. But apparently Orville is doing extremely well overall in ratings, which is great to hear -- the more sci-fi the better for us all.

I do also hope they dial down the humor in Orville a bit. I think they will.

And I think Discovery will also improve next season -- nearly every show does, season 1 is always rough. I believe what we are seeing on Discovery is the formation of Section 31.

the first few episodes of TNG weren't great either.

Funny you mention that... I'd watched all of them as well back in the day, and finally turned the little mama on to them. She's totally hooked on Voyager now.

For some reason we pulled up the first TNG episode (Far Point) a few days ago and man, it's amazing to see how far that show came from the beginning to the end.

Gotta check out Discovery soon.. my only fear being that it's just a graphics action fest for short attention spans with little substance. But sounds like it has some good content?

Well I liked the last episode far more than the first few, so my only advice is to give it a chance if you dislike the first few.

Discovery seems well made in certain respects and weird in others like a different show. I was more of a TOS and B5 fan. Disheartening to see the view of the phasers firing from the viewscreen looking like J.J. Abrams "Star Trek: Bridge Commander". Phasers used to be sustained beams in the process of "phasing" not star wars pulse bursts. Otherwise I can hear their use of much of the TOS sound effects in the subtle background (sensors, communicators, very faint "thump thump" of the TOS sickbay bed monitors) in their attempt to placate the TOS nostalgics and justify the time of the show to be 10 years before Kirk's 5 year mission which overlaps Pike's and early Lt. Spock's time. (TOS 1st rejected pilot & "Menagerie" pt.1&2)

I love the Orville! I gave the first episode a shot just because the critics hated it so much and I have always enjoyed family guy. I went into it expecting a full on spoof type of show like SpaceBalls or something.

But it actually turned out to be a legit Sci-Fi show and not just a parody show. For me, the humor is an added bonus for the most part. Like all attempts at humor some jokes don't land from time to time, but the overall tone of the show is great.

In some ways having the added humor makes it seem more realistic. In real life there are always people cutting up and goofing around in almost any situation. But most seiralized TV shows leave any trace of this out completely. Seeing more of the side conversations that are not critical to the plot make the show and characters seem more real.

I hope it gets a second season, but I haven't heard anything yet.

long time trek head who's gratefully we finally get a new trek on a weeklyish basis.

we'll start with the orville, which IMO is essentially the real-life version of Galaxy Quest.
although it is technically a "parody" the orville does a great job of emulating the trek of the 90's and has captured the spirit of Star Trek pretty effectively.

in the episodes that i've watched Bortus, in particular, has some great lines and is a bit of scene stealer. his flat delivery of alien reaction to human conversation is more times than not hilarious.

i've found that for many star trek:discovery is a bit like black licorice, you either love it or you hate ( i suppose that could be said for trek in general)

st:dis is definitely not your mamas' star trek and is far more action orientated than TOS or any of the 90s trek.

while st:disc isn't the star trek i wanted per se (i would have preferred a sequel to TNG, VOY, DS9 instead of more prequels) i've found it to be entertaining and intriguing enough to continue watching.

it hasn't been said outright but i think the showrunners are rebooting the mythology of "number 1" from the 1st TOS pilot that was rejected by NBC.

in "the cage" number 1 is portrayed by majel barrett and is referred to by capt. pike as the most experienced officer on the ship, although her backstory is never discussed on screen it's implied that the disconnect between her expert experience level and her rank is the result of politics (the implication being she should be in command of her own ship)
and i ultimately think that is where the series will end with sequoia martin green becoming the first officer for 1701 under capt pike.

tbh Orville is far too cheeky to be ever taken seriously, one can only desire chewing that sophomoric humor after so many repeated attempts

as a sci fi fan I'm all for the show in itself, its just not that weighty on a scale with other sci fi

Discovery is interesting in that it has quality actors and has showed the ability to be funny with the Rainn Wilson Cameo

but my go to scifi show is still The Expanse
that last season was not as great as the 1st but still decent and well worth another
I know its not a space explorer type show and dont really care, good space scifi is good space scifi

cheers and beers

the st:disc showrunners have definitely used elements from quite a few popular sci-fi shows in the recent past.

the mycelium spores are really reminiscent of the glowing fungus in the expanse and way the spore hub drive actually transports the discovery is essentially the FTL jump from battlestar galactia.

We finally got around to watching the premiere of The Orville last night and must say, we liked it a lot... the humor gives it an interesting twist on the genre. Looking forward to tuning in again tonight .
