Having been "doing IT" for 30+ years, the best money I ever spent was on a QNAP NAS for local/secure storage and CrashPlan for family PCs (sans any financials but wife takes a LOT of photos that once gone are GONE). It's like life insurance, some people say it's not worth it until you get killed by a drunk driver then your family gets screwed unless you planned ahead (of course I'm presuming one has others that rely on them; if you're single YMMV).
Anyway - rolling the "lack of backup dice" isn't stress I want to deal with anymore. Also important to never open Emails from unknown people, etc. - "safe surfing" (and if you really want to be paranoid, run a separate VirtualBox VM for surfing "less than safe sites" - that way if the VM gets toasted, just delete it and start again).

i found after re-imaging twice that the GUI's messed up imac and Windows 8.1. It got to a point where the less sophisticated approach was the winner: Bootcamp. THen they don't mess with each other. They operate seperately. And the Windows 8.1 on the iMac is the slickest PC of all. Some people put Bootcamp on the MacBook and switch back and forth from Windows to the IOS, because they are tied into TradeStation on Windows and need to use the Apple side for something else, Facetime, etc.
One FBI Official says simplest solution for firms, individuals often is to pay to retrieve data. The FBI is wrestling with an increasingly common type of computer hacking, one that requires victims to pay ransom to get their encrypted data back. At a computer security comference in Boston last month, FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Joseph Bonavolonta said certain types of "Ransonware" are so good that "to be honest, we often advise people just to pay the ransom." Ransomware is a form of extortion, in which hackers infiltrate a business's or an individual's computer, encrypt the personel data, and then demand a payment to decrypt it, usuallly ranging from $200 to $10,000. Certain types of ransomware, commonly known as "Cryrolocker adn Cryptowall" are so effective that they make it close to impossible to recover the data if the victum hasn't made backup copies. Victims of ransomware are reluctant to talk about it and of fear of being targeted again. Mr Bonavolonta's remarks reported earlier by secuityledger.com have prompted debate about whether the FBI is encouraging, directly or indirectly, behavior that leads to more hacking. In June 2015, the FBI said that there had been nearly 1000 Cryptowall related complaints over a 14 month period with victims reporting losses totaling more than 18 million dolllars. Last year, a Justice Department takedown wrested control of one illicit network of such computers, but the man indicted at the center of the scheme, a Russian remains a fugitive. The FBI said, "I don't think its and official FBI policy the U.S. citizens pay extortion. But if you get hit with this and you don't have a backup, your options are pretty limited...You can leave your data encrypted of you can pay them. However, in terms of advice for an individual user, they should never just blindly pay the ransom. Regular users aren't going to know the difference between less-sophisticated and more sophisticated ransomware."
I was a victim of this about a year ago. My take on this is why can't they follow these ransomware people back to their servers and delete everything, destroy their facilities with defense department help. Why do the U.S. Citizens have to stand and take this. There should be some retribution by our government. What is your opinion?
It took me 20 years of trying linux off and on but I finally switched to kubuntu a month ago and would never consider going back to windows now. Windows XP was great but they are downgrading the system at this point. Linux is finally user friendly, install and everything just works.
KDE Plasma 5 gave me some issues but Plasma 4 is rock solid. The biggest thing is it actually feels like an upgrade to Windows. It feels like it is 2015 and we have made some progress.
Try the iMac 27 inch hi res schreen, 1 terebyte solid state hard drive, with bootcamp. Buy it at Best Buy and have the Geek Squad put your ideal OS on there and I guarartee, with the wireless mouse and wireless keyboard; you won't go back to use one of the Tower PCs. You may have the right OS for you, but with bootcamp, you can use the face time and other things on the Apple PC. It's 3.5 GHZ, I5, Intel. No matter what OS is your primary OS, this hardware is more secure.
I don't know if you'll need an anti-virus for our linux dirivitive. But this hardware beats anything I've had. It hooks up very easily with loading from your phone. It has a external disk drive. I got the silver one. And I got a scanner to scan in documents. If I were you , I'd run 2 OS's with bootcamp. It works marvelous!
Software is the only thing Apple is good at. Why would you pay $2K for an iMac to run Windows? Apple has horrible quality control. Look at all of their broken bent iPhones, dented MacBook bodies, and shitty iPods. For $2K, I could build my own desktop that will last 5 years longer than your Apple iLol.
I had a custom tower specially built for me for 5K. My son builds his own. He's a gamer. He's never confessed to burning out chips trying to up the clock speed. You need a good graphics card for games, not gambling. My problem was I described earlier, I was hit by an encryption virus that wanted money to unencrypt my data. I threw out everything. The tower was at least 5 years old, quad core with two 14 inch screens. I just threw it all out. I wripped out the drives. I had some backup data a couple years old. I was transitioning to retirement. With this iMac, I would never go back to a tower, not Dell, not HP. I have a ipad. I bought both at Best Buy and if I have any problems the Geek Squad helps me out. I had the iMac re-imaged 3 times, twice trying Parallels and then Bootcamp worked like a charm. I have not had any problems. I got the best monitor I've ever had, Hi-Res, 27 inch. My hard drive is a terabyte solid state, no problem. My wireless keyboard and mouse, nice mice!!!! For me this works. I can run tradestation which only runs on Windows. Some people use bootcamp on a Macbook and run Tradestation and switch over to the iOS, Apple, OS for other uses. My Droid HTC One Smart Phone hooks up and I can download and upload, no problem. If I'm somewhere and I need to get on-line, I can hook my iPad to my Smart phone and it works just like broadband. I use Verizon. It cost 20 dollars more per month instead of using a hub for 50 a month. I did my TurboTax on my iPad the last 2 years using my Smart Phone connection, no problem! As far as getting an iPhone, I like my Droid HTC One. I've got 20 gigs of stock data I use with an App. I like using Swipe, which lets me spell large words instead of the iPhone millennial words like "4' for "For", etc.
this cpu has 6 cores (12 threads) boost up to 4.1ghz but also these newer gen cpus can stay near the higher frequencies longer.
find a good manufacturer that cares about thermals.
For most people the DELL XPS 15 2018 non foldable one will be fine.
For those that like numpads get something else.
I personally will buy a laptop with an 8750H that is not available in the US that is almost as slim as an XPS but has a numpad AND a mechanical thin profile keyboard.. hopefully it is as good as it sounds.
Then at home just plug into a 34" ultrawide (with monitor arm) and a mechanical keyboard and a MX Master mouse and you will have a great trading machine you can use at home or take with you on the road.
I really think this is the year that laptops become powerful enough (unless you need something more powerful than a 1050ti or 1060 or 1070 gpu)
