I know that there lots of dog lovers on BigMike. That is why I decided to create this thread.
I am a first time dog owner. Few months ago we got a Golden Doodle. We have been having issue after issue since we got him.
Once he swallowed Nylabone, had to take him to emergency. Luckily it was an edible one.
Later he had Urinary Tract Infection and had to spend good amount of money again.
Back in August he had an episode of Loose stools but he got better in a few days after feeding him bland food.
Again since friday he has been having loose stools.
Not sure what triggered it. It started out of the blue, no change in diet.
We started giving him bland diet rice, boiled chicken, yogurt with Pumpkin.
Yesterday, he got better with normal stool in the morning. By evening we thought he was back to normal and gave him regular Puppy food, ******* Lamb and rice. By late evening, he started having loose stools every 2 hours. Today we put him back on bland diet. Looks like he is hungry and we are feeling really bad for him.
Vet asked us to keep him on bland diet and to drop of Stool Sample tomorrow.
Last time he had similar episode was in last week of August but when we gave him boiled rice with yogurt, he recovered quickly. I am sure it was due to change in diet last time. This time I am not sure.
I am kind of worried. Any input from dog owners is appreciated.
I feed my labs raw chicken thighs. Just hand them the thigh. No danger with bones because they aren't cooked, so won't splinter.
I also feed 20% of their diet with bone (stew bones, again uncooked - ask your butcher) and a small amount of organs.
Research BARF, biologically appropriate raw food. Personally, I am 100% raw and don't subscribe to the belief that dogs need veggies. Instead, I feed cow stomach (tripe) which is loaded with nutrients.
I failed to mention that since moving to Manta, I have access to very inexpensive fish. I researched and found sardines are the best choice (lowest mercury content), so have been feeding roughly 25% of their diet with sardines lately.
Just whole sardines, simply hand them to the dog and they'll do the rest. The dogs go absolutely CRAZY for them!
Don't be worried!! Been there with the pumpkin, rice and chicken with my late golden retriever several times over 14 years. Never got an explanation. I think he just ate stuff in the yard every so often that didn't agree with him as we don't do table scraps or any of that. Don't fall for buying the ZD diet food from the vet!!! Rip off and your dog will recover. If you boarded him lately he likely ate different food. If went to the beach he certainly drank salt water. BTW if he foams at the mouth he licked a toad
For years, I fed whatever I felt was the most premium I could buy at Costco. Then my second Lab (Molly) started getting seizures. After months of research, I became an expert on dog food, and determined her seizures were caused by diet.
I tried every variation you can think of with "traditional" dog foods, including very gourmet ones. Prescription vet ones. Everything. Eventually, more and more research led me to BARF (the acronym, not the brand that appeared later) and then eventually raw.
The seizures went from several per week to only a few per year. And my oldest dog, Tyler, saw his skin allergies which he suffered from all his life go away almost instantly when I switched him over to raw. This is despite trying a dozen or more kinds of food with him over the years, and all kinds of medicine.
My youngest, Dexter, was started on raw the day I brought him home. At first he was like "huh, you want me to eat what??" but about two days later he was in love.
