I thought you guys might want to be social Since I really dislike Twitter and Facebook and all that (am using for marketing only), I thought I'd create a generic "shoot the sh*t" off-topic post, but since we're traders we'll call it "shoot the short". Everyone would rather be long than short, in a perfect world, right?

I added "futures.io (formerly BMT) Twitter" to the end of the topic name so you can get an idea this thread is just social interaction. Nothing of real substance here

A lot of you guys on futures.io (formerly BMT) are sort of like family, I chat with you often in Skype or PM or email or on the forum, so I thought there could be a use in just a more general 'twitter-type' social thread.

I'll get us started.

I just pre-ordered a media server called "Popbox", check out some stuff at Home | Popbox | Big Screen Everything. It will replace my Roku which I mainly use in my bedroom to stream Netflix crap to "wind down" before bed.

Now with Popbox, I can stream Netflix and also my terabytes worth of vids from my main PC library, which I already use to stream to my home theater setup in my living room. I don't subscribe to satellite or cable, I just get everything I want online in 720p or 1080p, and commercial free, and use my PS3 in my living room (and soon my Popbox in bedroom) to watch it.

It will be out in a couple months.

There is unofficial support and stuff like Hulu for popular sitcoms on ABC, CBS, NBC etc. There is no news (like 10pm news).

Works for me, I don't watch any of that stuff anyway.

Anyone here a Stargate fan? Maybe I'm pushing my luck But I really am enjoying the Stargate Universe franchise so far, it seems SG-1, Atlantis, and now Universe are really doing great. Too bad Star Trek itself has been off the air for so long...

Just installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my notebook.

Ubuntu Home Page | Ubuntu

Ubuntu is coming along very nicely! I deeply wish I could use it on my primary desktop, but it would be a drag to have to run MultiCharts and NinjaTrader in a virtual machine on a desktop whos primary focus is trading.

I was previously running Linux Mint 8 on my notebook. I just downloaded the ubuntu 10.04 iso, and used my handy unetbootin utility (apt-get install unetbootin) to stick the ISO on a bootable USB disk, and reboot. Voila.

I was thinking of messing around with Btrfs, but since my notebook has just one spindle it really isn't much fun.

Any Linux users?

I'm upgrading right now my netbook (Dell Inspiron), from Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 to 10.04, final result in one or two hours.
Does wifi/webcam/bluetooth/touchpad will works after the upgrade ? Maybe, good surprises can happen .
BTW, I've been very happy with this specific netbook version, Windows XP is not a good choice for a machine with a 10.1" screen, the UNR is made for these small screens, and really easy to use for "normal" users.

So no Stargate or Star Trek fans, eh? Boo.

I've been working on the powerpoint for tomorrows webinar most of this morning. It seems I am quite long winded, it's up to about 40 slides. But I think you guys are going to be able to come away after the webinar with some new outlooks or more clear views on trading with trends using multiple time frames.

At the very least, you're come out of the webinar knowing my views on it

Me too! I've always been a Battlestar fan, too, but when I compare Caprica to SGU, there is just no comparison! SGU is great!

Uh oh sounds bad...

Mike

Yes, bad:
- saturday: cold and wind outside, I just receive a new 1.5Tb hard drive, so why not trying to install and test Windows 7 on it. Ok, let's go, I install it.
Good, W7 looks nice !!!
Rha, too bad, no sound driver for my integrated sound card.
Anyway, no enough space on my production main drive, so I use Ghost to duplicate my small c: to the new hdd.
Reboot, looks ok, but some errors appears, services not running, my "Document and Settings" still on the old drive .
Never mind, let's go back, remove the 1.5 Tb drive, it should be fine, I'll see later what's wrong with Ghost.
Hmm, no boot possible on the production drive, missing .exe .
(3 hours already spent)

Then, my favorite Skype buddy told me that Vista drivers can work with W7. Cool, I have Vista drivers for my workstation (Fujitsu Celsius V830), so let's try something, using 2 identical sata drive in Raid 0, then use the new 1.5 Tb drive for data only.
I already have one of the two 300 gb in my workstation, but where is the other one ?
In the kids workstation, for sure !!!
So let's go, with a 320 Gb external drive, duplicating the contents of the d: of this other machine (1 hour), then open the kids pc, to find... no 300gb sata drive, but another IDE 320Gb...
Grrr...

But where is this other drive, am I crazy or what ?

Sunday...
I found it !!!
In one of my Linux server, another Opteron bi-socket motherboard from a Fujitsu Celsius V810. But this machine is a bit special, it don't want to boot on sata, so I have an old 20Gb drive for /boot, then the 300gb sata for /home /usr. And if I plug another IDE drive for cloning this sata drive, it won't boot (and the mobo is unable to boot on an USB stick, it would be too easy...).

Monday...
I've reinstalled a brand new Ununtu 10.04 on the Linux host, after a backup of my precious databases, I now just have to restore it, and hope all will be fine (200gb to move through the network, hmm...).
The next step is to install the two identical sata drive in my V830, check that the sata Raid works, then install W7, test if audio driver found is working, then reinstall Putty, FileZilla, Visual Studio, Office, TeamSpeak, Skype, Pidgin, Vnc, Picasa, R, Ninja, MultiCharts, TWS, Skype, VirtualBow, TeamViewer, Camtasia, Jing, Chrome, Firefox, WireShark, UltraMon, VLC, QuickTime, Gimp, ....

And I'm not giving all the details, nor a picture of my office now, which is something like Bagdad during Desert Storm: the same chaos, without dust and blood, but with screws, harddrives, and cases open

Wow.

Sounds like a busy couple days. I was telling my good ol skype buddy recently that I have a Q6600 system, 8GB, overclocked, just sitting in the garage. Need to figure out some better use for this, it doesn't deserve to die a lonely death like that... Not sure what to do with it though, MultiCharts licensing isn't as easy and free as NT, I'd have to buy another license if I put MC on it.

News Headlines

Senate OKs Amendment That Would End 'Too Big to Fail'

If this passes, and surely it will, it is going to be quite interesting to see what happens should we dip into another recession or find out that this recession is not ending but instead about to get worse... and we have another round of "giant" banks needing rescuing.

I think I read somewhere that the top three banks in the US have assets equaling like 25% of our entire GDP, that is just insane. Yet because they are so focused on earning zillions, they made such risky bets, that they needed help to avoid collapse. Will they change their tune now if this bill passes? Will they pile up cash somewhere, or raise consumer 'fees' to cover some sort of internal insurance plan? One thing is certain, they certainly have no plans to make less money!

Ugh, my 1TB external USB Seagate drive is dying. I've ordered a 1.5TB Samsung eSATA external drive as a replacement, will be here in a few days. My only hope is the first drive lasts long enough for me to pull the 1TB of movies off of it and transfer to the new drive... I will cry like a little girl if I lose those movies...

New server for futures.io (formerly BMT) is coming along. Got a test instance of vbulletin up on it, some impromptu testing shows at least 3-5x speed improvement (or more) over current site. The real improvement though is not in raw speed or perceived speed from an end user perspective, but that the new hardware can scale far better to meet future demands of the site (more users).

At the rate we're currently growing our needs will have doubled in about six months. It is my hope the new server lasts a very long time.

This has been keeping me busy this past week... but I'll be back to posting soon.

I still love the Star Trek re-runs - Next Gen, Voyager, even Enterprise but not DS9. Stargate's OK - I meant to follow Stargate Universe but never got around to it.

I'm ok with DS9 during all the Dominion battles Voyager got off to a rough start, but I liked the last few seasons. TNG naturally is just awesome. I'm not a big fan of TOS.

Stargate Universe is really quite awesome, I strongly recommend it!

I've got an older version of this:

Newegg.com - D-Link DIR-655 IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE802.11n Draft 2 Xtreme N Gigabit Wireless Router

Works fine for me, and has 1200 reviews with most of them 5 star.

Interesting article, I also read about Taleb Nassim's big options play on that day, and Barclay's subsequent hedging of its exposure. This comment from Gensler is typical of the madness today. "Gensler said data shows that the trades appeared to be a bona fide hedging strategy". Really! If I do a billion dollar OTC options trade where the market can't see it and then I just come in start selling Gamma like crazy, is that hedging or is the the hedging the prime intention in the first place.

I worked as an interbank exotic options broker at Cantor and ICAP for about a year and I learned a thing or two about options strategies. I was on a desk with 20 other brokers, a lot of adrenaline and noise, matching up huge trades across the banks. They call it risk sharing, of course the only real risk for them is one of the others going bust. I was on the desk in the spring of '08 when some of the banks stopped allowing Lehman as a counterparty, interestingly enough.

So here's how it works. Bank A does a few hundred million, or billion, in various flies and spread structures over a few days with bank b. A hold the apple paper, B holds the orange paper. In grotesque amounts of course that neither really has but it's just paper. So much in fact, that A can now go into the futures market and do ridiculous volumes backed by this paper. We call it hedging. They call it risk sharing. The general public and media calls it madness.

It's impossible to regulate and impossible to put back in the genie bottle. From a societal standpoint I think the best thing to do would be to force it all to the exchanges and add new exchange rules that allow for some form of 'darker trading'. At the same time, I like the madness as an intraday trader because I know that the market is just a game. You'll never know which way the ball is going to roll. As an intraday trader that's great because you don't care about why it's going in any particular fashion, you just want it to be moving. And then it does create a lot of liquidity and capital expansion, but who benefits, and then it's just too bad about the busts. Anyhow, I don't think anything is going to change because it has just become so complicated but it would be nice to see what these giant players in options are doing, out in the light of day. And I feel for those people who got burned by the actions of said speculators. It seems a bit unfair really.

You guys can wrap the YouTube videos so they show-up on screen in the post.

Just take the normal full YouTube URL, for example:

Code
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-PFRrJQtew
And then just put "[ yt ]" before it, and "[/ yt]" after it (without the spaces), ie:

[ yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-PFRrJQtew[/yt ]

(but delete the spaces)

And you'll end up with this:

Ever notice how CL (crude oil futures) can drop like mad, yet the price at the pump isn't even phased? Yet if CL is rising quickly, you can damn sure bet Exxon and etc are quick to raise the price at the pump.

Where is the government oversight and regulation for this? If i remember right, there is some law about gas stations only being allowed to raise prices once per day. If that kind of law exists, then where is the law that says if you are going to blame "the market" for the reason you are raising prices, then you must proportionately lower prices due to the same "market" in decline...

My gut says this isn't even close to happening right now. All these declines in CL lately have translated to about zero decline at the pump.

Yep the big petrol companies are doing in Australia too Mike. Groceries are the same, and hardware, and services and etc etc. All the big retail companies are fattening their margins and no one seems to be complaining?

Hi Treggs, I second that. Also when inquiries are held the players all come out blameless. Go figure

Sounds almost as if the congressman was seeking revenge for being yelled at.

So now what, do we just start voting for the "nobodies" in the next election, hoping and praying that these people are uncorrupted?

Or, we can just hurry up, make millions in the market and retire in Costa Rica...

X51A Waverider Breaks Record For Hypersonic Flight, Travels 6 TIMES Speed Of Sound

Quoting
An experimental aircraft has set a record for hypersonic flight, flying more than 3 minutes at Mach 6 – six times the speed of sound.

The X-51A Waverider was released from a B-52 Stratofortress off the southern California coast Wednesday morning, the Air Force reported on its website. Its scramjet engine accelerated the vehicle to Mach 6, and it flew autonomously for 200 seconds before losing acceleration. At that point the test was terminated.

The Air Force said the previous record for a hypersonic scramjet burn was 12 seconds.

BREAKING NEWS

"Those are some sharp shoes!" - POTUS

Obama, Clinton Drool Over Soccer Team's Shoes (PHOTOS)

Quoting
President Obama, Vice President Biden and Bill Clinton got to meet the U.S. World Cup Soccer Team at the White House this morning and all the trio could talk about was how dapper the players looked! From the pool report:

"I want to be on this team just for the shoes," Clinton said, marveling at the light brown numbers worn by the players and coaches, decked in white and blue warm-ups and tan dress slacks. "This is the only team that I've ever seen that had these cool shoes."

"This is the best dressed soccer team I've ever seen," POTUS said, agreeing, "those are some sharp shoes."

Who here thinks sam is crazy?

Try the 5 shot treatment: Any quality 80+ proof liquor. Drink at the 1st sign of respiratory illness, germs do not stand a chance. Swish-like mouthwash, gargle and swallow, repeat until 5 shots taken. Works every time, or you just don't care - I can't remember.

Cell phones killing bees?

[H]ard|OCP - Cell Phones Could be Killing off Bees

Researchers say that cell phones could be behind the bees dying off everywhere. Calls to Mark Wahlberg’s cell phone requesting comment have not been returned.

The reason behind a massive die-off of honey bees over the last several years has largely eluded scientists, but researchers at Punjab University now say radiation from cell phones is probably responsible for the decline. The technology is interfering with bee navigational senses and tampering with inner-hive life.

Story: U.S.’s $13 Trillion Debt Poised to Overtake GDP: Chart of Day - Bloomberg.com

U.S.’s $13 Trillion Debt Poised to Overtake GDP: Chart of Day

Quoting
June 4 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama is poised to increase the U.S. debt to a level that exceeds the value of the nation’s annual economic output, a step toward what Bill Gross called a “debt super cycle.”

The CHART OF THE DAY tracks U.S. gross domestic product and the government’s total debt, which rose past $13 trillion for the first time this month. The amount owed will surpass GDP in 2012, based on forecasts by the International Monetary Fund. The lower panel shows U.S. annual GDP growth as tracked by the IMF, which projects the world’s largest economy to expand at a slower pace than the 3.2 percent average during the past five decades.

“Over the long term, interest rates on government debt will likely have to rise to attract investors,” said Hiroki Shimazu, a market economist in Tokyo at Nikko Cordial Securities Inc., a unit of Japan’s third-largest publicly traded bank. “That will be a big burden on the government and the people.”

Gross, who runs the world’s largest mutual fund at Pacific Investment Management Co. in Newport Beach, California, said in his June outlook report that “the debt super cycle trend” suggests U.S. economic growth won’t be enough to support the borrowings “if real interest rates were ever to go up instead of down.”

Dan Fuss, who manages the Loomis Sayles Bond Fund, which beat 94 percent of competitors the past year, said last week that he sold all of his Treasury bonds because of prospects interest rates will rise as the U.S. borrows unprecedented amounts. Obama is borrowing record amounts to fund spending programs to help the economy recover from its longest recession since the 1930s.

“The incremental borrower of funds in the U.S. capital markets is rapidly becoming the U.S. Treasury,” Boston-based Fuss said. “Do you really want to buy the debt of the biggest issuer?”
