Just installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my notebook.

Ubuntu Home Page | Ubuntu

Ubuntu is coming along very nicely! I deeply wish I could use it on my primary desktop, but it would be a drag to have to run MultiCharts and NinjaTrader in a virtual machine on a desktop whos primary focus is trading.

I was previously running Linux Mint 8 on my notebook. I just downloaded the ubuntu 10.04 iso, and used my handy unetbootin utility (apt-get install unetbootin) to stick the ISO on a bootable USB disk, and reboot. Voila.

I was thinking of messing around with Btrfs, but since my notebook has just one spindle it really isn't much fun.

Any Linux users?

Mike

I'm upgrading right now my netbook (Dell Inspiron), from Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 to 10.04, final result in one or two hours.
Does wifi/webcam/bluetooth/touchpad will works after the upgrade ? Maybe, good surprises can happen .
BTW, I've been very happy with this specific netbook version, Windows XP is not a good choice for a machine with a 10.1" screen, the UNR is made for these small screens, and really easy to use for "normal" users.

So no Stargate or Star Trek fans, eh? Boo.

I've been working on the powerpoint for tomorrows webinar most of this morning. It seems I am quite long winded, it's up to about 40 slides. But I think you guys are going to be able to come away after the webinar with some new outlooks or more clear views on trading with trends using multiple time frames.

At the very least, you're come out of the webinar knowing my views on it

Sam, were you able to get the Windows 7 driver for that other problem you had the other day?

Anyone here a Stargate fan? Maybe I'm pushing my luck But I really am enjoying the Stargate Universe franchise so far, it seems SG-1, Atlantis, and now Universe are really doing great. Too bad Star Trek itself has been off the air for so long...

Mike

One Star Trek and Stargate fan here

I like how much darker and mysterious the SG Universe is becoming!

Me too! I've always been a Battlestar fan, too, but when I compare Caprica to SGU, there is just no comparison! SGU is great!

Yes, bad:
- saturday: cold and wind outside, I just receive a new 1.5Tb hard drive, so why not trying to install and test Windows 7 on it. Ok, let's go, I install it.
Good, W7 looks nice !!!
Rha, too bad, no sound driver for my integrated sound card.
Anyway, no enough space on my production main drive, so I use Ghost to duplicate my small c: to the new hdd.
Reboot, looks ok, but some errors appears, services not running, my "Document and Settings" still on the old drive .
Never mind, let's go back, remove the 1.5 Tb drive, it should be fine, I'll see later what's wrong with Ghost.
Hmm, no boot possible on the production drive, missing .exe .
(3 hours already spent)

Then, my favorite Skype buddy told me that Vista drivers can work with W7. Cool, I have Vista drivers for my workstation (Fujitsu Celsius V830), so let's try something, using 2 identical sata drive in Raid 0, then use the new 1.5 Tb drive for data only.
I already have one of the two 300 gb in my workstation, but where is the other one ?
In the kids workstation, for sure !!!
So let's go, with a 320 Gb external drive, duplicating the contents of the d: of this other machine (1 hour), then open the kids pc, to find... no 300gb sata drive, but another IDE 320Gb...
Grrr...

But where is this other drive, am I crazy or what ?

Sunday...
I found it !!!
In one of my Linux server, another Opteron bi-socket motherboard from a Fujitsu Celsius V810. But this machine is a bit special, it don't want to boot on sata, so I have an old 20Gb drive for /boot, then the 300gb sata for /home /usr. And if I plug another IDE drive for cloning this sata drive, it won't boot (and the mobo is unable to boot on an USB stick, it would be too easy...).

Monday...
I've reinstalled a brand new Ununtu 10.04 on the Linux host, after a backup of my precious databases, I now just have to restore it, and hope all will be fine (200gb to move through the network, hmm...).
The next step is to install the two identical sata drive in my V830, check that the sata Raid works, then install W7, test if audio driver found is working, then reinstall Putty, FileZilla, Visual Studio, Office, TeamSpeak, Skype, Pidgin, Vnc, Picasa, R, Ninja, MultiCharts, TWS, Skype, VirtualBow, TeamViewer, Camtasia, Jing, Chrome, Firefox, WireShark, UltraMon, VLC, QuickTime, Gimp, ....

And I'm not giving all the details, nor a picture of my office now, which is something like Bagdad during Desert Storm: the same chaos, without dust and blood, but with screws, harddrives, and cases open

Wow.

Sounds like a busy couple days. I was telling my good ol skype buddy recently that I have a Q6600 system, 8GB, overclocked, just sitting in the garage. Need to figure out some better use for this, it doesn't deserve to die a lonely death like that... Not sure what to do with it though, MultiCharts licensing isn't as easy and free as NT, I'd have to buy another license if I put MC on it.
