So Bezos beat Elon, but it's kinda like comparing apples and oranges given the difference between space and orbit. Elon says it's a difference of achieving mach 3 (Blue Origin) vs mach 30 (SpaceX).
Sometimes I scratch my head on the sub-orbital 'space tourism' i.e. 100k up and down viability. Any friends who understand physics would rightly ridicule any 'astronaut' claims.. fun maybe or just a ridiculous vanity trip for the ultra-rich (and yet maybe not that bright..?) I'm not sure.
In 2001 I was fortunate enough (at a fraction of the cost) to do a MIG 29 jaunt up to 20k meters or so. It was great fun. If it was a little longer and the curvature of the Earth a bit more curved.. I really don't think it would matter that much? I experienced lots of Gs then zero gravity for a bit, ok no floating champagne service and not much room obviously but I know now what it feels like.
Even with a 27 minute flight (we did a bit aerobatics on the way back..woohoo!) it was plenty of sensory experience, probably far more? I guess there is a group experience and you can't have that in a MIG.
I just hope some useful technology and a generation of usefully skilled people will come of Blue Origin/Virgin for Mars etc.
I'm sure many have seen this from the series or FB posts but I don't think it is off topic.
Gives me some glimmer of hope, not that the scientific minds and leaders of exploration will work harder but that the public consciousness might look upwards again if we get past this micro-dark age?
