I used to never have to worry about diet and could knock back the pints on the weekend as I was always quite active...until I got an office job! I work in the financial field and when the markets are quiet you find yourself snacking out of boredom.

Recently I started putting on weight due to the lack of movement throughout the day, so to combat this I found the best combo is to have some fruits like apricots, dates and bananas in my drawer as well as some nuts. The combo usually satiates any cravings I get and they are healthy!

Another good tip is if you find yourself drinking fizzy drinks like coke then just have some sparkling water instead, bit more exciting than still water and of course is not bad for you either. Other than that I try to go to the gym to combat lack of movement in the day.

Will try the fizzy water good tip. Snacking is almost an auto-pilot response for me, something that needs to be trained out of me by better habit. I'm in the city too so know exactly what you are talking about!

I'm looking to start training/gym from this w/e, am planning on increasing the number of daily meals and reducing portion size. I think that conducive to better energy levels and metabolism.

Thanks,

I try to eat a lot of protein because I'm a big guy and it gives me the ability to concentrate for longer periods of time without feeling hungry. I like a big breakfast, no snacks, and lots of water and coffee.

What protein foods do you eat regularly, or is it a mix?

Usually in the morning the easiest thing to prepare or eat are eggs. Hard-boiled eggs are best because I don't need to clean pots and pans or add butters or oils to the mix. If I wake up hungry I can just quickly eat an egg to satisfy the hunger pains and it's easy to remove the yoke if I want to be healthy. The best part is that I can cook a bunch of them at a time and can store them for a while in the refrigerator. I usually eat some form of protein with every meal especially if I have to think a lot or exert a lot of energy. Carbs are important too. I also exercise throughout the day. Eating handfuls of fresh spinach is a great brain food too. Anywhere I can sneak spinach into meals is good.

I've read its much better to eat fresh fish than the capsules, I don't eat fish now but planning to try and add it to my diet. Currently I have a lot of legumes/nuts/beans etc very tasty and provides protein and omega oils.

Lol with you on the potato chips too mate.

To find how I reached that conclusion you would need to read this book :

The Honest Truth About Dishonesty: How We Lie to Everyone--Especially Ourselves - Kindle edition by Dan Ariely. Health, Fitness & Dieting Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.

I mentioned it here:

Also read (though it is rather over the top):

U. G. Krishnamurti - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Krishnamurti was known for his unusual health and diet preferences. Carrying with him a "portable kitchen" in a tiny suitcase throughout his travels, he consumed a great deal of salt and cream, and stated "no meal should take longer than a few minutes to prepare." Throughout his life, Krishnamurti never saw a doctor or took medication, believing the body would take care of itself. Often complimented for good looks in his old age, Krishnamurti would respond "that's because I don't eat healthy food, I don't take vitamins, and I don't exercise!"

I love fish!

However all Omega 3 fish are also laced with mercury and hence it is Catch 22 eating them.

Hence I prefer the fish oil to salmon.

I'm learning that processed foods are not good for my energy levels at all completely agree with you on your post.

From my journal I've found that certain foods are in a very real way impacting my health, I've cut out the fizzy drinks and processed foods (mostly) and feeling a lot better for it.

I think its important to be able to enjoy yourself and have a rich mexican meal once in a while. :-)

Problem is I live in Texas and could eat Mexican everynight. I personally love Greek, Italian, and Asian cuisines.

Biggest problem in Soda and processed food is the HF corn syrup. A little isn't that bad, but when everything you eat has it, it takes its toll. That is why I like the Paleo diet. (But I still love bread and pasta.) Key to me is fresh food cooked daily. Doesn't really matter what it is as long as you are eating a variety and cooking good .

A good cereal is easy to put together to knock out hunger pains quick in the morning.

I always try to knock it out right when I wake up because I hate that lingering hunger. It's not necessary to stuff myself but to at least just put a little fuel in the fire to get rid of the distracting discomfort. I may ante up and eat more later when I have more time.

It's not entirely important what you eat as long as it's good for simply thinking with the brain. No one food or another is going to make that great of a difference because ultimately the market decides whose going to make money. I'd like to hope people don't follow their system differently eating one food over another.

Isn't the Japanese version more nutritious?
