I'm watching the world cup....for the first time....and it looks like Chile paid the refs pretty well....am I missing something? Australia hasn't gotten a single call....does look a bit odd.....
Anyway, looking forward to seeing what all the fuss is about....

Yeah, there have been quite a lot strange / false referee decisions already....looks like they didn't manage to get enough professionals for all these matches.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to Monday when Germany enters the tournament playing against Ronaldo...uhm Portugal.

I guess this is just not intended - as it's the same discussion every four years. The world cup is not a tournament of the best overall teams, but a tournament of a selection of qualified teams from each continent. Same goes for the referees, they are a selection from each continent and this always brings less experienced referees into the focus.
I would prefer it to be like in the ice hockey world cup, where they use the best referees available and no one complains when in a game Canada against Sweden the referees come from Canada, too. However this would never work in football, too much conspiracy theories there already

Yeah, I watched this match as well. Congrats for a really great match, Oranje knocked them literally out of the stadium.
I can't remember Spain being defeated in a major tournament that high.

So essentially its a contrived sporting event where players play for their countries but not necessarily for the teams they normally play for....kinda like the Olympics but with only one sport????????????

Yep, there are many players in the tournament who play for food in Germany's 'Bundesliga' which you might slightly compare to the US MLS.
But I think this applies to every World Cup in any sports discipline...

Exactly, although you could probably say this goes for every sporting event. Besides that it's a huge money making machine making billions of Dollar for the FIFA.

Hehe...sometimes I'm thinking that's the only reason for having such a tournament.

this is certainly true in Hockey where players are separated from their teams, cherry picked and formed into a national squad. In Canada there is lots of discussion as to who is picked for the final team after a training camp of the best. Not all selected are the best scorers though. They need "grinders" as well as pure goal scorers. I would imagine the same is true of soccer.
Watched Spain/Netherland...Spain just folded like a house of cards.
Not a big soccer fan but always like watching major sporting events like this. Uruguay/Costa Rica are just starting now
Any thoughts on how Rooney and his three lions will do against Italy tonight ?

I'm not a bit footie and only just saw your post, so a bit late now, I did watch the match, different type of football, great game, shame about the result. Much better than the last ten years but still with obvious weaknesses that were predictably exploited, a bit like my trading... Thinking Johnson and dare I say it probably Rooney have to go or be rested..., but I think it's the start of a team for four years time, not this year.

...Well, after Ecuador's 1:2 defeat against Switzerland I truely hope that @GFIs1 and other people from Switzerland won't get banned from futures.io (formerly BMT) now...
...So I'm hoping the same in regards to myself if Germany wins against USA on June 26th...

Unfortunately, yes...but the referee didn't accept a regular Swiss goal before as well...

Only saw this now, before the game I was quietly confident that England could win/draw, not so muc during or after :-)
I think Rooney was very bad but playing out of position, more happy that Sterling and Sturridge were used well.
Some awesome games so far, Germany spanked Portugal yesterday, you probably enjoyed that one @Daytrader999 :-) A great team performance compared to the one man show of Portugal. My wife was saying she's looking forward to Germany vs Holland if they are drawn together, I cannot argue with that..

Yeah, I wasn't THAT convinced that Germany would have such a good start in the tournament, but the next matches will tell FWIW... I was quite disappointed about Portugal's appearance since they've played much better in the past...and after 0-2 IMO CR7 refused to participate any longer in the match, which is not a great attitude towards the team.
It seems like Rooney is a bit out of shape ATM which would be quite the worst moment now since the team needs a strong leader, but Sterling and Sturridge did a really good job and definitely will still improve during the tournament.
AND I missed Frank Lampard and some other big players of the good old times...
Well, and in regards to a possible match Germany vs. Holland, I really hope that they won't meet before the final, hehe...
