Google Fiber Coming to Austin (and now Provo) 1gb Internet
Google Fiber coming to my home town of Austin. $70 for 1gb up and down internet connection to your home is just incredible.
Don''t need this kind of pipe for trading right now as I use a remote server anyway and not really sure how NT would benefit from such a large pipe if if had it on 1gb connection. But interesting to think about the future and trading. More and more pipe will be necessary as things like AI etc come into trading. Will be interesting to see what is built trading and other applications as this kind of bandwidth is rolled out to larger population.

This sound like a real privilege, 1 gbps is a lot. I have to live with a meagre 45 mbps. I am lucky that my kids don't watch video all the time.
1 gbps will be an exception and not available for the majority of the population. Don't expect water supplies if you live on the moon!
I have checked what is done over here. Building new FTTC nets is too expensive, and therefore the likely outcome will be an intermediate solution based on hybrid technology which uses both LTE (mobile standard) and VDSL vectoring (a technology used to improve transmission speed over the existing copper networks).
In about 3 years, 85% of all households should have access to LTE and 65% access to VDSL. The hybrid technology, which will cover about half of all households would allow for download speeds of 200 mpbs and upload speeds of 90mbps.
This means that I won't probably have 1 gbps via a fibre network, but I do have 45 mbps (download) / 7mbps (upload) now with some hope that this will evolve to 200 mps/ 90 mbps over the next few years.
In the end all this bandwidth is only needed, because people stop reading and watch television and you tube videos all the time. Even traders now post videos of flickering DOMs and nervous mouse cursors....
@Fat Tails it is interesting what google is doing. While they believe this will be profitable one of their main reasons for doing it is to spur other broadband providers to push higher speeds. For years the major carriers have said no one wants 1gb but google is out to prove them wrong. Another nice feature of what google is doing is TV service. You can pay $120 per month get 1gb internet plus 200 TV channels. They also throw in a terabyte google drive service and the remote they throw in for your TV is a Nexus 7 tablet.

They also affect website owners to design sites that have a fast download.

I currently have 50Mbps from Time Warner and am paying dearly for it. The only other option in the area is DSL which is not a real option, it is so slow. LTE doesn't reach my area just yet, I am about 5 miles outside the zone.
Right about that @Big Mike. AT&T announced right after Google they plan to do 1gb internet in Austin. I am not sure if they will and I would much rather get it through Google. But I am loving watching Time Warner and AT&T be forced to step up and try and compete with Google. Let the games begin.

I wish I could get their service in Round Rock. Right now I am stuck with 6Mb ATT DSL. Funny, all my neighbours have at least U-verse, and they are a few feet away from me, but since this address is not in their database... oh well.
