The health risks associated with radiation exposure, whether it comes from cancer treatments or medical imaging scans, are much more significant than most people probably think. The latest published data on radiation exposure suggests that roughly 25,000 Americans develop cancer every year as a result of medical radiation exposure, and many more experience DNA damage that could eventually lead to the development of cancer and other health problems in the long term.
Every year, millions of Americans opt to undergo computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and X-ray scans for medical purposes, thinking that by doing so, they are keeping up with the latest technologies in advanced medical care. But each time medical patients get one of these scans, their bodies sustain varying levels of ionizing radiation, the negative effects of which can take years to manifest as they build up cumulatively over time.
CT scans, which are a relatively modern medical imaging technology, are particularly problematic as they emit far higher doses of radiation than traditional x-rays do. Based on the figures, a single CT scan can blast up to 500 times the amount of radiation released by a single x-ray, an astounding level when considering how gratuitously CT scans are administered within the medical profession today.
In a new study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), it is reported that the use of all medical imaging scans, including CT scans, has risen dramatically between 1996 and 2010. The use of CT scans in particular, more than tripled during this time, which is in large part responsible for doubling the proportion of patients now receiving what is considered to be "high" or "very high" radiation doses on a regular basis.
Overuse of CT scans causing significant uptick in cancer rates
Failing to recognize the long-term health consequences of repeated and perpetual exposure among their patients, many doctors needlessly order CT scans for patients who do not need them, or order multiple scans when only one is necessary. Data compiled from outpatient claims filed through Medicare, for instance, reveals that CT scans are routinely overused at hundreds of hospitals across the country, and that patients are needlessly "double scanned" more than 80 percent of the time. The high cost of CT scanning equipment has also led to an epidemic of unnecessary CT scans at private practices as well. Because they know that, most of the time, insurance companies and government health programs will reimburse them, many doctors simply default to CT scans whenever there is even a remote possibility that they might be useful -- and oftentimes these doctors double-up on scans as well, even though this is almost never medically necessary.
"Double scans expose patients to extra radiation while heaping millions of dollars in extra costs on an already overburdened Medicare program," wrote Walt Bogdanich and Jo Craven McGinty in the NYT, concerning CT scan abuse within government healthcare.
Besides the added costs to the medical system, medical imaging overuse is destroying the physical health of many Americans. According to data compiled by Jane Brody over at the New York Times (NYT), radiation exposure from medical scans now accounts for 1.5 percent of all cancers that occur in the U.S. Based on figures released by the American Cancer Society (ACS), this translates to about 24,583 Americans that develop cancer every year as a result of Western medicine. "All imaging has increased, but CTs account for the bulk of it," said Dr. Rebecca Smith-Bindman, a specialist in radiology and biomedical imaging at the University of California - San Francisco (UCSF) to the NYT. "There's clearly widespread overuse. More than 10 percent of patients each year are receiving very high radiation exposures."
Some doctors refusing to provide care unless patients submit to imaging scans
Despite their known dangers, CT and other risky imaging scans are often pushed on patients by doctors who refuse to provide care unless patients submit to their orders. Presumably to protect themselves against litigation, many doctors will insist that their patients undergo multiple imaging scans in order to confirm a medical condition, even when doing so puts patient safety at risk.
Fortunately, many health insurers are now taking notice of this rampant abuse, and are putting policy measures in place to discourage it. These include requiring preauthorizations before patients can receive scans, for instance, or restricting who can administer the scans, and on what types of equipment.
Risk factors: The risk of colorectal cancer increases with age; 91% of cases are diagnosed in individuals 50 years of age and older. Modifiable factors associated with increased risk include obesity, physical inactivity, a diet high in red or processed meat, alcohol consumption, long-term smoking, and possibly very low intake of fruits and vegetables.
Studies have also found that individuals with type 2 diabetes are at higher risk of colorectal cancer. Consumption of milk and calcium and higher blood levels of vitamin D appear to decrease colorectal cancer risk. Studies suggest that regular use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, and menopausal hormone therapy also reduce risk.

It is estimated that more than 88 million nonsmoking Americans 3 years of age and older were exposed to SHS in 2007-2008.
SHS contains more than 7,000 chemicals, at least 69 of which cause cancer.
• Each year, about 3,400 nonsmoking adults die of lung cancer as a result of breathing SHS.
• SHS causes an estimated 46,000 deaths from heart disease in people who are not current smokers.
Adopt a physically active lifestyle.
• Adults should engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week, or an equivalent combination, preferably spread throughout the week.
Colorectal age 50+
* fecal immunochemical test (FIT) with at least 50% test sensitivity for cancer,immunochemical tests are more patient-friendly, and are likely to be equal or better in sensitivity and specificity.
*Fecal occult blood test (FOBT) with at least 50% test sensitivity for cancer, Testing at home with adherence to manufacturer’s recommendation for collection techniques and number of samples is recommended.
Generally eating more vegetables and fruits are a good idea.
If you find it hard to remember to eat fresh vegetables then you can buy a vegetable juice like V8 - not as good as fresh but something.
Eat organic if you can afford it.
Long term ingestion of poisions applied to foods is not good for you.
There are a few heavily poisoned foods why the poison is hard to remove (strawberries, lettuce, ...)
Have a cleansing drink each evening before retiring to bed
My formula is to combine in a blender:
one red grapefruit
herbal tea to cover (*)
1 tbs of psyllium husks
Blend and drink before it thickens.
(*) - you can substitute a fruit juice of your choice, and it doesn't have to be red grapefruit - I use that because of the lycopen. An apple is another good choice and helps reduce high blood pressure. The key is the tablespoon of psyllium husks.
Try to avoid angry thoughts or feelings of ill-will towards others.
Before bed I say my prayers and bless those I know - loved ones (or not). You can also send healing light to those you know who are sick.

Constant arguing, fighting and certainly hatred, are ways to increase your odds of cancer and illness. Stress in your body raises cortisol levels which contribute to cancer. (Plus they are not so good for your spiritual health either!)
* Don't eat when you are upset.
* Divide your food into 6 small snacks. Don't have big meals. Avoid combining too many food groups in your stomach at the same time.
* Start your day with something easy to digest e.g. a banana. then 30 minutes later have a protein intake - this is slow digesting and helps you maintain a steady blood suger level throughout the day.
* Don't eat anything heavy within 3 hrs of bed.
* Drink lots of water (e.g 3 quarts a day (24hr day) and 4+ if exercising hard.). EASE into this. The body does not like too rapid change.
* Don't eat processed foods. Many contain harmful additives. Adding transfats to packaged "food" is common place as is soy letchin, preserving chemicals, bleaches, sodium lauryl sulphate, etc. Shop around the outside of the grocery store fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy, eggs, lean meat -not processed meats (for non vegetarians).
* Don't drink carbonated drinks.
* Don't buy food/drinks with high fructose added.
* Coffee - 1 or 2 cups a day (organic shade-grown) for anti-oxidations, or green/white tea can be positive. Let your body tell you. If you get digestive upset or heart palipatations from it don't drink it.
You can have cocoa instead of coffee, or a small one swuare of dark chocolate each day.
* Alcohol one drink a day (e.g a glass of red wine) unless your religious or health beliefs are against it or if you are pre-disposed to alcoholism.
* Healthy oils: 1-2tbs of extra virgin olive oil, and 1-2tbs of walnut or flax seed oil (omega3) each day. Refridgerate after opening. Only by non-hydrogenated nut butters (e.g. Peanut butter). Your body can't handle hydrogenated oils. Don't you the cheap store bought grain oils - corn, canolas etc as they use hexane in the manufacturing process.
* Variety of nuts and seeds- fresh are better. (avoid walnut pieces as sometimes there is a peice of shell which can crack your tooth or a filling when you bit on it.)
Get plenty of restAim for 8.5 hours plus - your body will tell you the correct amount but generally North Americans don't get enough sleep (suffer from chronic "sleep deprivation"). Have a regular routine at bedtime that cues your body that it is time to sleep (eg. make your evening shake, listen to quiet relaxing music, read something positive/spiritual, etc.) same thing, same time each night.
Take you mulitvitamin in the morning.
Reduce chorline absorption There are filters you can buy to reduce the chorline in your shower/bath water ($30 last 6-8 months). It takes our lead and other nasties as well. Your skin absorbs a lot - perhaps even more than the chlorine in your drinking water.
For drinking water - let the tap in the tub run for 3 mins until cold to clear the lead in the water from the pipes - if your building is older than 20?yrs. Fill some jugs. Let it stand overnight. (I also boil mine). Filter with a pour through filter.
Avoid plastics and aluminum.
Especially the plastics that are hard and clear like glass and those with BPA. PVC plastic is a carcinogene.

In one book I have read the nickle in stainless steel is link to prostate cancer. I don't use stainless steel cookware or drinking/food containers.
Avoid using household chemicals and posions
For your bath/shower etc use little soap (borax in water sparingly) or a soap bar from the health food store (or Sunlight). Most shampoos contain harmful chemicals. North Americans use too much soap and they dry out the natural oils in their skin and scalp.
Get exercise and fresh air each day.
A brisk 20min walk with a smile on your face and a cheerful friendly hello for your neighbour is great. A nice walk after supper instead of slouched in front of the bad-vibe TV is good.
Control you mental diet
Try a 30day holiday from the TV and newpapers.
I haven't watched the TV in years. I don't read the newspaper (except the business section of comic if I'm in a coffee shop). Don't read too much internet "news", certainly don't focus on the horrible crimes. Read some books. You control the content and the time and place. Too much staring at tiny electronic screens isn't great either.

This is one I need to make time for - but from those I know who do it - it has wonderful benefits
Final noteMy feeling is that many links to cancer and other diseases will take a long time for conventional western medicine to "prove". Just as it took over 50 years of lobbying against the tobacco companies sponsoring a debate, so it is with big pharma and disease doctors who are making so much money from illness.
The individual needs to learn how to keep himself healthy - your death and disease specialists - (aka doctors and govt agencies) don't know about food and health. It is not in there interest to do so. Drug companies don't fund reseach on products they can't from from - such as an apple. Learn about the healing power of herbs.
For example if you're only use to drinking a couple of glasses of water a day slowly move up to the target amount. Listen to your body.
If your on a reducing diet to lose fat and for 2 pounds a week as a target maximum. (If you're really obese you might lose it faster at the bigging, fine. Just don't try to lose more than 2 pounds a week. Otherwise your body will theink there is a famine out there and switch to starvation mode. It will try adn keep the fat and burn muscle. You don't wnat this as each pound of lean muscle burns 10 calories a day exercising or not. Try to make time exercise on a reducing diet. It reves up the metabolism and helps you keep muscle. Drinks lots of water.
Avoid yo-yo dieting. Go at it slow and make it permanent. Simply design a good permanent eating plan and slowly replace the worse meals with good ones.
Body for life has a good program for a quick start 12 week cycle to losing fat. You can win money too (if you buy one of their products just once during your 12 weeks). Its similar to the bodybuilders 12week cut before a contest.

I did this and had great results. I would suggest that you read the book - at most libraires focusing on Chapter 2 Crossing the Abyss . This is where you set in writing your reasons for change - important to help you stay with the program.

My brother, Doug who lives in the Montreal area, has advanced lung cancer and the prognosis given by his doctors is but a few weeks.
Once he had his first chemo treatment the cancer spread like wildfire.
I have recently learnt that the chemo feeds the cancer.
I mentioned my brother's cancer to a neighbour who lives in my building. She told of her best friend Natalie who had stage 4 breast cancer. The doctors had done burn, poision and cut on her (radiation, chemo and surgery).
She submitted herself to the full monty of surgery, chemo (double dose), radiation and this essentually brought her to deaths door. She says you can feel the life leaving you as the chemo goes in. After finishing this brutal assault on her body they told her they had not got it all and she should get her affairs in order.
By chance, Natalie had started to drink 3 litres of distilled water a day during chemo and taking bicarbonate of soda, as well as changing her diet to raw. This may be what saved her life from the treatment.
Jeremy (now her husband) continued to assist Natalie through detoxifying and alkalizing her body and giving her plenty of pure water 3-4 liters a day. She is alive and well 4 years later, (despite the doctors terminal illness prognosis). Last year she had to have a scan for insurance claim and they confirmed what Jeremy and Natalie knew - that she was completely cancer free.
Though may likely too late for my brother, I make this post in case it may be of help to someone out there who has a loved one or friend with cancer and is looking for a better prognosis. (I have no knowledge other than what I have shared above about Natalie as shared with me by my neighbour which I believe to be the truth about Natalie.)

What you say is very true. I read an article about Big Pig Pharma and Banks and debt and the ugly alliance that porfits off creating disease.
The thimerosal you mention is a mercury preservative they add. Imagine taking one of the most toxic chemicals know and injecting people with it for a flu shot! The amount the use is hundreds of times beyond EPA limits. The amount of mercury they inject in a hepatis B shot given to new born babies is so high you would need to be a 275lb man to absorb it. The alarming rate of autisim is linked to thimerosal.
