Interesting. I've read that quite a few manufacturing jobs will be returning home to the USA, so you will see more Made in USA things. BUT, it won't do anything for the jobs situation as when the return home the manufacturing will be done by robots.

Even the Chinese are doing that. They now have a robot that cuts noodles and puts them in soup. Machine costs equivalent of $2000 compared to hiring someone to do it which costs on average $4700 per year.

The Made in the USA hugo boss knock offs I was buying the wang fu jing market were so incredible, absolutely amazing quality, for three wears. I still can't figure out how the products could look so indecipherable from the real thing, amazing replicas, and then fall apart so quickly. For five bucks a shirt you could get five to twenty wears out of them before they were toast, on a per wear basis perhaps it works out to the same cost as buying the real thing.....

I've bought knockoffs in Thailand that look exactly like the real thing, feel like the real thing and three wearings later, they are totally ruined. Funny how the real thing bought in the states but made somewhere in Asia manages to last for several years if you take care of it.

I quit buying knockoffs unless I actually needed something temporary. I arrived Taipai once with no luggage and needed something to wear for three days. Bought some stuff, wore it three days and threw it away.....it needed to be thrown away by that time.

Usually high tech jobs means fewer jobs. But someone has to design those robots, someone has to build them, someone has to install them and maintain them, etc.

I actually quite like the chinese knockoff shopping scheme... get a beauty tommy hill shirt for six bucks, perfect replica, wear it for two months, and a get a new wardrobe... could sure use some threads now, my god, four years since the crash and the start of my intraday trading career, I am still alive... ragged in rags, but breathing...

You guys should try being in the UK and buying British made stuff, near impossible apart from locally grown organic goods.

Well, my first degree is a BA economics, deans honor from Western Ontario, and I'll just say, no offense Milton, there's a real world too..... For all the lives lost and given to creating a society where good lives can flourish to be flushed to the lowest communist bidder is a total load of bs, except for those profiting by it, then of course, it's all heir Milton said...

The case for "Made in XXX" label lives a terminal life, it borders being an anachronism in a progressive world. The genie of inter-connectivity and inter-dependability is out of the bottle. And in my opinion far too slow because we are afraid to embrace what it means to let go and adopt new things. But it will come in good time.

The concept of nations and states is limited. Friedman's many discourses are hard to argue against....

The Case for Free Trade | Hoover Institution

Our conceit of "our"selves, "our" society, "our" culture, "our" country versus "theirs" will one day (not in my lifetime certainly) die a much long awaited death. Replaced by "our" planet and "our" peoples of the world. True free trade opens up equality in labor and costs, at the same time increasing quality and efficiency (not to mention the many many positive spin offs for the environment).

Some excel at labor, others at ideas, others at execution, still others at services. A made in XX label hinders the propagation of that efficiency of labor and wealth creation for all.

I would also say that not one of the 80 million carded communists in China, a wonderful badge to carry around if you are in middle kingdom, have ever heard of Milton Friedman and could not care less about his economic models... and they sure as aren't lining up to be enlightened.... people over here are so naive...

What it takes to be 'Made in USA'

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- With so much talk about the need to revive U.S. manufacturing and create jobs, more companies are touting their American-made roots in order to lure customers.
The notion that buying something made domestically will boost the economy has become an article of faith during the economic crisis. And many businesses are trying to capitalize on that by attaching a "Made in USA" label to their products.

Brownells is the only website I have shopped at that had a made in USA filter. Danner boots make excellent made in USA boots. They cost a few hundred but will last forever if taken care of. Same deal with Allen Edmonds dress shoes, Park Ave's, made in USA and will last forever. New Balance makes a big deal about being made in USA but I have been to the New Balance store here in San Antonio and every piece of footwear in there is made in Asia. Duluth Trading sells made in USA blue jeans for the low, low price of only $84.95. They are the only made in USA jeans I could find.
