I have that installed as well, but never used. Now I remember the reason. Microsoft does not offer IMAP for hotmail and live accounts, and I do not want to download mails as I access them from different PCs. With Live Mail I was able to get around that problem and have both e-mails from Microsoft and from other providers mirrored on my machines.

There is a life after Google..
and after Microsoft:

best to redirect / and or copy mails from Msoft to a provider who supports IMAP.
With that the Thunderbird solution works excellent.

Use gmail. It can pull from outlook, and supports imap.
