From Jules Verne Epouvante flying car (1903)

to MIT Transition nowadays

============================================

That's interesting. However if one needs a runway (that is, 'road')
to get into the sky, or a runway (that is, 'road') to get on the ground,
then it's a plane, not a flying car.

Fat Tails View Post

People will not be flying around in future by using inefficient machines. The current waste of energy and natural resources and the extinction of 50% or more of all species is a temporary phenomen that can not be sustained. Driving a 100 kg living organism around in a 1,500 kg steel cage is ridiculous, not sexy.

The future will see light, slower moving vehicles and new tools for mass transport that are fit for the purpose, but there will certainly be no supermans flying around the sky.

In 1902 there was no air travel in a heavier than air aircraft. Now there are many ten's of
thousands of people in the air at any given instant.

As far as energy goes, I think the graph of coal reserves shows we're all set for a long long time.

===============================================================

The machine may even carry mail is special cases. But the useful load will be very small. The machines will eventually be fast, they will be used in sport, but they are not to be thought of as commercial carriers.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The energy necessary to propel a ship would be many times greater than that required to drive a train of cars at the same speed; hence as a means of rapid transit, flying could not begin to compete with the railroad.

A complete and total waste of time. But that's sort of why you're here.
